Today we observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to commemorate the life and work of Dr. King in the American civil rights movement. His work and advocacy for civil rights and equality transcended national boundaries and inspired movements worldwide. His message of unity, nonviolence, and civil rights echoes across borders, shaping movements for social justice everywhere.

At the Pacific Council, we stand committed to fostering dialogue, promoting diversity, and bringing together people from different backgrounds and sectors to share ideas and effect change on issues that are important at home and abroad. Let's honor Dr. King's legacy by continuing to work together towards a more just and inclusive world.

25 years of global engagement

Founded in cooperation with the Council on Foreign Relations and the University of Southern California in 1995, the Pacific Councilโ€™s founders believed that the West Coast, not just the D.C.-New York corridor, had an important role to play in grappling with โ€“ and solvingโ€“ global issues. The founders wanted to re-conceptualize U.S. foreign policy as a concern for not only foreign policy practitioners, but also leaders from sectors including business, media, politics, academia, and law, especially on the West Coast and in particular Los Angeles.

To commemorate its 25th anniversary, the Pacific Council has evolved its mission to build the capacity of Los Angeles and California to have impact on global issues, discourse, and policy. Our renewed vision starting in 2020 is contributing to a world in which a spirit of internationalism drives global engagement and diverse perspectives inform policy. We operate under a newly articulated theory of change that in order to promote global engagement across Los Angeles, we must build the capacity of local citizens to become global affairs champions, harness the combined power of individuals, business and institutions in our city, and export Los Angelesโ€™ talents to the world on issues where we add value.

The Pacific Councilโ€™s activities help to foster a global Los Angeles. We believe in an informed citizenry committed to global engagement for all.
