📚❤️ Sometimes the biggest dreams begin with the smallest pair of hands holding a book.
Long before Dolly Parton became one of the world’s greatest champions for children’s literacy, there was a very personal reason behind her passion.
Dolly grew up watching her father—a hardworking, intelligent man she deeply admired—go through life unable to read or write.
She never forgot that.
So in 1995, she did something about it. She began Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, initially giving books to young children in her home county in Tennessee. Her idea was beautifully simple: put a book into a child’s hands, make that child feel that the book belongs to them, and start that relationship with reading as early as possible.
Today, millions of books are finding their way into children's homes every month. But perhaps the most important part of Dolly's story isn't the number of books.
It's the moments those books create.
A toddler climbing into a parent's lap and saying, “Read it again.”
A little girl pointing to a picture and learning a new word.
A boy turning the pages of his very own book until he knows the story by heart—even before he can read the words.
A parent who worked a long day but finds ten quiet minutes at bedtime to open a book and enter another world with their child.
Those moments matter.
Because reading to a young child isn't only about teaching them how to read. It's about talking, listening, imagining, asking questions, laughing together and letting a child know, “This time is yours. You matter.”
Books can become some of the first building blocks of a child's dreams.
That is what we find so inspiring about Dolly Parton. She saw how the absence of literacy could affect someone she loved—and turned that experience into an extraordinary gift for generations of children.
At the Kiwanis Literacy Foundation, her example inspires us every day to keep putting books into children's hands and believing in what can happen next.
Because you never know which book will be the book.
The one that makes a child curious.
The one that makes a child believe.
The one that changes the direction of a life. ❤️📖
