China has been promoting traditional medicine alongside its flagship Belt and Road Initiative, which is developing road, rail and other major infrastructure projects across Africa.

“Any utilization of threatened species in TCM could potentially stimulate further demand, incentivize wildlife crime and ultimately lead to overexploitation.”

While most treatments are plant-based, demand from the industry has been blamed for pushing animals, including pangolins and rhinos, to the brink of extinction.

😡 THE WORST OFFENDERS:
South Africa, Cameroon, Tanzania and Togo were among African countries that had already signed agreements with China to develop TCM while South Africa and Namibia had recognized TCM as part of their public health system.

👉 REALLY WORRISOME:
Some retailers in Africa have been looking to establish complete supply chains from source to sales, and urged stricter oversight of TCM as well as government action to prevent the use of threatened wildlife in its products.

👉 Important facts from the new study:
SHARE for good science and a deeper understanding of our .

🐒 “Researchers analyzed more than 1,200 interactions with groups of chimps and bonobos in zoos and found that they commonly exchange gazes or swap gestures to share their intentions about social interactions. Those gestures included touching each other, holding hand and even butting heads.”

🙊🙊 Scientists say the apes' ability to signal hellos and goodbyes indicates something much bigger than politeness. It shows that chimpanzees and bonobos can communicate a mutual sense of obligation towards each other.

The power dynamics and familiarity between two primates also played a role in how much of a "hello" or "goodbye" the animals offered up.

👉 Hello and Goodbye - entry and exit.
“We previously thought that humans were the only species that coordinate those entry and exit phases of interactions.” — Raphaela Heesen, researcher at Durham University

❗🐘 It is important to understand that certain wildlife, elephants particularly, also greet each other, and have established ways of saying goodbye. As sentient beings it should not be a surprise that elephants, bonobos, chimpanzees and other animals would employ established communication methods to govern how they interact. They are not ‘like’ humans, they are ‘like’ themselves, living as themselves, and have done so for a very long time.

In my dreams
______________

In my dreams.
I walk with matriarchs.

🐘 The soles of her feet
are palimpsests.
With each step,
she gathers
the bones of her mother.
Reading them.
Tenderly.
Annotating
her memories
and saving each
in a crevasse,
on the soles
of her feet.

In my dreams.
I walk with matriarchs.

🐘 Her body is wrinkled.
More scarred than
the
skin of earth.
With the soles
of her feet,
she listens.
Broken skin
on
broken skin.
The story
the earth tells her
is the same
story
she has learned
from the bones
of her
mother.

In my dreams.
I walk with matriarchs.

🐘 She knows
her people
are primal.
An ancient
tribe, once
numbering millions.

In my dreams.
I walk with matriarchs.

🐘 She is aware
of the distance
to the far horizon.
And how long
she has
before
the
wandering fire
in the clear
blue
sky
is engulfed
by earth
in shades
of scarlet
and gold.

In my dreams.
I walk with matriarchs.

🐘 She knows
of the nature
of water,
the generosity
of trees
and the comfort
of
shade.
She can reach
to the heavens.
Tearing branches.
Bringing
down fruit
bringing
down leaves.

In my dreams.
I walk with matriarchs.

🐘 She has walked
the same river bed
A thousand times.
Maybe more.
Ploughing for water
with
her body's
ivory.
Swords
digging deep
through the
skin of earth
to emerge soaked
in sand,
in liquid,
in water.

In my dreams.
I walk with matriarchs.

🐘 She knows of
unremembered
pathways,
once studded
by rock,
granite
and stone.
And strewn
with the burnish
of a million
leaves.
She knows
of the sound
of rapids and the
raging rush
of molecules
of water,
thirsting for
the roar
of the sea.

In my dreams.
I walk with matriarchs.

🐘 She is a matriarch,
the bone collector,
the one
who listens
with her feet.

And in my dreams.
I walk with her.

🐘 LIMPING, WALKING FOR 8 DAYS. Is this what the Buddha would have wanted for Raja? Is this COMPASSION? 🙏🏾
*SHARE* for Nadungamuwe Raja.

🐘 . . For a culture that espouses COMPASSION and for a Parade -the Esala Perahera- that celebrates COMPASSION (via Buddhism), the "call of culture" has induced the exploration, abuse and cruelty toward an old and magnificent creature who should be resting.

🐘 68 year old Nadungamuwe Raja started walking to participate in the Kandy Esala Perahera on 2nd August 2021. GMFER's friends on the ground spotted a swelling on the front left leg a few days ago. And, yesterday -09.08.2021- after travelling for 8 days with just 1 day's rest Raja appears to be unable to bend his leg and is experiencing swelling.

🐘 Is this COMPASSION? Is this Buddhism? 🙏🏾

📜 African Wildlife Foundation built a primary school for young children in Kidepo Valley, Uganda. The goal: “Students will not just learn about their rich natural heritage — they will see conservation in action.” —AWF

📜 The Headline: You can’t join in this work when you don’t have that word called ‘conversation’ in your heart.

📜 “We are not going to succeed in fighting the wars to protect our ecosystem if we don’t bring the youngsters on board.” — Sudi Bamulesewa, AWF Country Director, Uganda.

📜 GMFER has its own intersectional educational program called Mambas in the Park (MITP) in South Africa; a program where the mothers and their children of the Black Mambas travel to Greater Kruger (National Park) to meet their wild neighbors and learn of the importance of conservation; in turn, we are also learners; we learn from the mothers and kids about traditional modalities of conservation and the good work and challenges experienced by the rangers of the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching in their work and their lives.

📜 GMFER is -also- ready to launch a similar program in Uganda, with Bwindi Conservation for Generations Foundation, called Bwindi Earth Council, the program will engage the women, children and residents of the villages close to Bwindi impenetrable Park, home to almost 50% of earth's last remaining mountain gorillas, a small number of illusive forest and savanna elephants and a myriad other unique species of wildlife. Please support our good work. We thank you in advance.
