A Photo Recap of the Bahram Beyzaie Tribute at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles
From August 27–30, 2026, the American Cinematheque honored Bahram Beyzaie—one of Iran’s most influential filmmakers, playwrights, writers, and scholars—with a special retrospective co-presented by PARS Equality Center and Farhang Foundation.
Spanning four decades of his remarkable career, the retrospective featured:
• Uncle Mustache (1970)
• Downpour (1972)
• Journey (1972)
• The Stranger and the Fog (1973)
• Ballad of Tara (1978)
• Bashu, the Little Stranger (1987)
• Dialogue with the Wind (1998)
• Killing Mad Dogs (2000)
Beyzaie is a thinker who has transformed cinema into a language for expressing his ideas. By weaving together mythology, history, and collective memory, he reexamines themes of identity, justice, and human relationships. In his works, women are powerful, active, and central characters who play an essential role in shaping and advancing the narrative. By challenging stereotypes and conventional narratives, Beyzaie has reimagined and preserved an important part of Iran’s cultural and storytelling traditions.
