🏆 We’re proud to honor David Huerta, President of SEIU-United Service Workers West, with the Changemaker Award for championing the rights and dignity of working families, immigrant communities, and essential workers.

Through his leadership, thousands of janitors, security officers, and other essential workers have fought for better wages, stronger workplace protections, and greater economic opportunity. His commitment to defending immigrant communities during federal immigration enforcement actions reflects the spirit of the Changemaker Award.

Join us Thursday, Oct. 1, at The Park DTLA for our Latina/o Heritage Month Celebration & Awards Reception, where we’ll also honor Vanessa Hernández (NEZZA) with the Voz del Pueblo Award and Senator Maria Elena Durazo with the Legacy Award.

🌟 We’re proud to honor Senator Maria Elena Durazo with the Legacy Award for her decades of leadership advancing economic justice, workers’ rights, and immigrant protections.

Before serving in the State Senate, Senator Durazo empowered thousands of predominantly Latina/o hospitality workers through her leadership of HERE Local 11. In the Legislature, she has continued that legacy, authoring landmark legislation establishing California’s first statewide minimum wage for healthcare workers and protecting street vendors from having their personal information shared for federal immigration enforcement.

🎤 We’re proud to honor Vanessa Hernández (NEZZA), singer and songwriter, with the Voz del Pueblo Award for using her voice and platform to uplift Latina/o and immigrant communities.

From singing the national anthem in Spanish at Dodger Stadium to organizing a benefit concert supporting immigrant rights organizations, NEZZA has shown how music and art can be powerful forms of solidarity and community connection. As the daughter of immigrants, she continues to amplify stories and issues that resonate deeply with our community.

Multilingualism is a superpower and what better way to nurture your home language or learn a new one than by reading? 📚 🌼

Aurora’s Bloom Wild Bookshop travels to different neighborhoods in Southern California, offering diverse books and California wildflower seeds to community members. Her bookmobile and book cart expose people to new authors, give them a glimpse into different cultures, and foster a sense of representation and pride.

What languages do you like to read in? 🙂

Latinas/os are often described as hardworking. But did you know that there’s actually data that backs that up?

A UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Institute report finds that despite working more on average, Latinas/os, especially undocumented Latinas/os, are paid less - and deal with worse employment conditions - than non-Latinas/os.

We talked with Victor Narro, Project Director and Professor of Labor Studies at the UCLA Labor Center, about why this pay gap exists and how we can invest in the next generation of Latinas/os to ensure they have access to equitable wages in the future.

Arts and entertainment are a vital space for uplifting stories and supporting our communities. We are proud to have partnered once again with Latino Theater Company to co-host a community screening of La Tierra del Valor.

La Tierra del Valor is a documentary short tracing singer-songwriter NEZZA’s decision to sing the national anthem in Spanish at Dodger Stadium amid the immigration raids that swept across Los Angeles last summer. Her action was an inspiring assertion of identity, belonging, and courage.

ABC, Latino Theater Company, and a private donor are proud to have covered the costs of the theatrical engagement that will qualify the film for Oscar nomination. On the final day of the film’s screening, we were joined by Director Cristina Costantini, and a diverse group of supporters from the arts, advocacy, education, and media spaces to watch the film and enjoy appetizers and conversation at Tavern on Brand.

Let’s make sure the world knows Nezza’s story - help spread the word by sharing this Instagram post with your network!

Did you know Salazar Park in East L.A. is named after L.A. Times journalist Rubén Salazar, who was killed while covering the 1970 Chicano Moratorium?

On August 29, 1970, thousands marched through East L.A. to protest the Vietnam War and its disproportionate impact on Latino communities. The peaceful march was met with police violence, leaving three people dead—including Salazar, who was fatally struck by a tear-gas projectile inside a nearby café.

Laguna Park was later renamed Salazar Park in his honor. Today, it remains a place of community, remembrance, and the ongoing fight for justice.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the LA Regional Listening Session! 💛✊🏽

ABC was proud to co-host this important conversation alongside CIPC, CARECEN, CHIRLA, ORALE, and SALVA, bringing together community members and leaders to help shape a unified set of recommendations for the incoming governor.

Community leaders shared their experiences and made clear that the needs and voices of Latina/o and immigrant communities must be centered in shaping an immigrant-focused policy agenda—including immigrant rights, protections, and pathways toward long-term stability.

We’re grateful to everyone who showed up and helped ensure our communities were represented in this important conversation. 💛✊🏽

It’s National Women’s Equality Day – did you know that Latinas still experience a significant wage gap in many fields? Latinas contribute so much to our communities and they deserve equitable compensation for their valuable work!

Veronica Terriquez is Director of the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, Co-Founder of the Latina Futures 2050 Lab, and a professor at UCLA. Her innovative research and civic engagement work is a beacon for emerging leaders in our communities, and she knows that a world where Latinas are paid their worth is entirely possible.
