Right here in Los Angeles, two WriteGirl alums once again co-emceed the Girls Empowerment Conference at East LA College, presented by the Department of Parks and Recreation for 300 LA teen girls. The joy and confidence of Samantha Campbell (Cal State LA grad) and Shandela Contreras (USC grad) helped inspire an entire amphitheater of girls this weekend, and we loved being part of it all. Over the past year, WriteGirl Teaching Artists have been leading weekly creative writing workshops for teen girls who are incarcerated, giving these vulnerable teens the opportunity to write about their experiences, their present challenges and their futures. We thank our Teaching Arts (including Vanessa and Ashley pictured here), as well as the Arts for Healing and Justice Network for their partnership as we continue to advocate for a justice system that puts care ahead of cages for youth. As we approach International Day of the Girl, a global celebration and spotlight on the needs of girls worldwide, we are excited to share with you a few photos from our online workshop this week with teens in Cameroon. Our WriteGirl mentors guided Cameroonian youth in several creative writing activities, as well as some signature WriteGirl activities such as our “Mind & Body Moment” and “Threads.” We welcomed special guests including actor and writer Constance Ejuma (Black Panther) and actor and singer-songwriter Andy Allo (Upload). Other WriteGirl teens from across Africa and Asia joined us on the zoom as well. It was a powerful international gathering! The smiles were wide!
