WriteGirl Support WriteGirl's mentoring & creative writing programs for teen girls and gender-expansive youth: https://www.writegirl.org/donate

At WriteGirl, we match girls and gender-expansive youth with women and gender-expansive writers who mentor them in creative writing. Every year, we produce dozens of workshops, panel discussions and special events to help teens get creative, get through high school and get to college! Through one-on-one mentoring and monthly creative writing workshops, teens are given techniques, insights and hot

topics for great writing in all genres from professional writers. Workshops and mentoring sessions explore poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, songwriting, journalism, screenwriting, playwriting, persuasive writing, journal writing, editing and more.

A BIG thank you to all our incredible singer-songwriters 🎶🎤🎸

Some parting wisdom from our Executive Director Keren: “Every day, your life is full of songwriting material. Whatever your emotion, write some short statements about it, as you are feeling it. Then later, when you are wondering what to write a song about, you can dive back into those moments, those stories, and use them to fuel your songs.”

Huge thank you to our sponsors SKECHERS, ASCAP Foundation, Inspired Nation and Dr. Hauschka!

Our teens working hard with our special guest songwriters

Some songwriting advice from Laurie Geltman: “Don’t be tempted to use AI; you have your whole life to find your own voice and AI will keep you from discovering who that is, and personally, figuring out the “puzzle” that a song is is the most satisfying and thrilling part of making it.”

WriteGirl alum & California Youth Poet Laureate Summer Hamzeh expands on why metaphor and image is so important to poetry and its effect on an audience:

“Hope is unstoppable, hope is persistent. But that doesn’t really strike your audience as much as when you put it into these images… when I write, I like to think I’m writing a picture. I’m writing a painting. Those visuals really stick with people.”

Dr. Joyce Ashuntantang is a poet, actress, interdisciplinary scholar, & Professor of English at the University of Hartford. She discusses the importance of movement in poetry, and how it’s sometimes a necessary writing tool:

“When I am writing poems that have to do with youth, that have to do with hope… there has to be movement. Hope has to be a verb. It’s something you do. You can’t hope without action.”

SofĂŤa Aguilar, poet & WriteGirl teaching artist, shares a piece of work with our teens, providing a stunning example of sensory and transportive detail:

“I am in New York with my mother, and choose to consume what reminds me most of home.

They say you can be transported like Dorothy, trade her red slipper for a slice of cucumber, a cube of melon slathered in chamoy and tajin.”

WriteGirl Executive Director@Keren Taylor introduces our mentees to the theme of Identity for today’s poetry workshop and emphasizes just how important identity is to poetry: “What poetry really thrives on is when we hear who you are, what you care about, what makes you tick. When you write from a point of view of identity, there is no chance that AI can write it like you can.”
