On 18 November 2025, the RIR team, accompanied by representatives from DREDD (Direction Régionale de l’Environnement et du Développement Durable - Madagascar’s environment authority), visited the Aranta Sotema Mangrove Restoration Project to conduct a field survey of the previous year’s restoration activities. 📋

The main objectives of the visit were to:
✅ Assess survival rates in the planted areas,
✅ Evaluate environmental conditions and external factors affecting the plantations, and
✅ Review overall progress toward the project’s planting targets.

It should be noted that DREDD did not evaluate the entire site but focused exclusively on areas where planting had already occurred. Particular attention was given to the quality of the restoration work and the effectiveness of maintenance and protection measures implemented by RIR. This targeted approach enabled the team to provide more precise and detailed feedback, allowing for a clearer measurement of progress and better-informed recommendations for future site management. 🎯

During this follow-up mission, DREDD formally evaluated the RIR team’s performance. The final rating awarded for our planting efforts was a B+, equivalent to an impressive 89%. This strong result reflects the hard work and commitment of everyone involved and underscores the value of the close collaboration between ARC and Red Island Restoration. Such positive recognition is highly motivating and reinforces our determination to continually improve our restoration practices. 🏆

In August 2025, nursery operations resumed in Ampijoroa for Ankarafantsika National Park's forest restoration. ARC together with our planting partners, Red Island Restoration focused on rebuilding the nursery with bamboo and ethically sourced wood, preparing compost for nutrient-rich soil, and using palm fronds for shade to minimize plastic use.

The team prepped germination strategies, including seed beds and polypot sowing, to ensure healthy seedling growth. The dedicated Red Island Restoration team maintains the nursery, protects plantations, and seeks more infrastructure support to sustain their community-led efforts.

ARC Milestone – 1.5 Million Trees Planted 🌱

The Accelerated Restoration Collaborative has surpassed the major milestone of 1.5 million seedlings and propagules planted across Brazil, Nepal, and Madagascar, representing 30 species in forests and mangrove estuaries.

This achievement reflects the dedication of local teams, communities, and partner organizations who bring on-the-ground expertise. It also honors the commitment of our collaborative sponsors, whose support makes restoration at this scale possible and whose steadfast partnership since ARC’s founding continues to drive our mission forward.

A special thanks goes to Red Island Restoration operating (RIR) in Madagascar, whose partnership since ARC’s founding has been central to our collective growth and success. Their expertise and collaboration have been critical in reaching this benchmark. The collaborative relationship between ARC and RIR will continue to expand its impact in the coming months and years.

The 1.5 million mark is what we consider to be a modest starting point and signpost on the path to a consistent increase in the number of resilient forests, thriving ecosystems, and stronger and truly self-sustaining communities.
