In a new podcast, Senator Booker just confirmed that only 7% of federal funding goes to food our doctors tell us to eat (he should have just said plant foods raised for human consumption since doctors are a mixed bag). The question is: Can Booker in good conscience vote for a Farm Bill that perpetuates this glaring disparity and injustice to animals, consumers and the planet? U.S. Department of Agriculture doesn't follow its mission of cultivating a safe and secure food system for all Americans. It's first priority is protecting the interests of the the animal agriculture industry. So as the industry's extreme conditions endanger animals and public health with insect-born diseases, the USDA responds by dumping our tax dollars into costly high-tech facilities to enable the industry to continue profiting at the expense of animals and public health, instead of promoting safer plant protein development. Everyone seems to be asking us to urge our Senators to vote no on The Save Our Bacon Act, but is that the worst thing for animals in the Farm Bill? Not even close! We can have a bigger impact if we are willing to think out of the box and more strategically.

Some have argued that the US Dietary Guidelines don't matter because Americans don't follow them anyway. What this claim misses is that government institutions and the private food industry IMPLEMENT these guidelines by translating them into actual menu options! This administration's guidelines urge Americans to eat more full fat animal products, as if Americans don't already eat enough of them.
