Project Hulmahan Los Angeles Launches Exhibit

The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Greater Los Angeles (UPAAGLA) and partner Bayanihang Marikenyo at Marikenya (BM+M) officially launched Project Hulmahan Los Angeles exhibit on November 11, 2023. It was held at the Filipino American Community of Los Angeles (FACLA) Hall in downtown Los Angeles.

More than 100 people attended the launch to witness over 70 artworks made from wooden lasts created by artists from the Philippines, LA, Nevada, New York and Canada. Seventeen artists graced the event and proudly showed off their creations.

UPAAGLA President Eric Panuncialman and Project Hulmahan LA Chair Dennis Reyes thanked the sponsors and all the people who were instrumental in making this undertaking possible. BM+M President Zena Bernardo narrated the origin of Project Hulmahan and its impact to its beneficiaries towards food security and disaster preparedness. Philippine Deputy Consul General Maria Alnee A. Gamble spoke about the importance of having this kind of project to the Filipino community.

Seven artworks were sold for the night. The rest will be available in an online store at the UPAAGLA website for sale until the end of 2024. Other related events will be lined up in the future.

The program was hosted by UP alumni Yvee Guevara and Christian Ylagan. Media coverage was provided by Asian Journal and Steve Angeles of Balitang America.

THE LAST LAST

This artwork was the last one submitted by a Los Angeles artist. Incidentally, the same artist was the one who first submitted an artwork as well. What a way to close out. The alpha and the omega.

Sweet Resilience

Creating this art piece has been fraught with challenges, from the initial stages to the final touches; it seems there's always an unexpected hurdle to overcome. Whether it's grappling with the intricate placement of polymer clays or facing the frustration of inadvertently burning a portion of the piece during the baking process, each step has presented its own set of setbacks. Even when covering the artwork with resin, the drying time exceeded the norm, adding another layer of difficulty.

Despite these persistent issues, I refused to surrender to frustration. Instead, I embraced each problem as an opportunity for creative problem-solving, tirelessly remaking damaged sections and finding innovative solutions along the way.

The journey of crafting this project has been a testament to perseverance and the ability to triumph over adversity in the pursuit of artistic expression.

LOLA’S FLOWERS

Lola's Flowers" by artist Mark Wood is a mixed media creation that transcends traditional boundaries and takes viewers on a visual journey that's as intricate as it is captivating. At first glance, "Lola's Flowers" welcomes you with a subtle vibrant explosion of colors. The acrylic paint breathes life into a lush greenery, with delicate flowers in full bloom.

Gold leafing, thoughtfully applied, adds an aura of opulence and depth to the composition. It glistens and shimmers, enhancing the artwork's overall allure. Look closer, and you'll discover more craftsmanship in the hand engraving on metal and wood. These intricate etchings offer a delicate contrast to the bold strokes of acrylic, adding a sense of depth and mystery to the piece. Each line and curve seems to tell a story, inviting you to explore the artwork's hidden narratives.

Rigid foam sculpting introduces an intriguing textural dimension, creating a sense of depth and relief within the composition. The sculpted elements create a unique interplay between light and shadow, adding yet another layer of complexity to the artwork.

This piece should allow viewers to immerse themselves in a world where beauty and intricacy coalesce. It's a celebration of life, art, and the endless possibilities that unfold when different mediums come together in a symphony of creativity.

(Mark Wood decided to donate all his artist fee to Project Hulmahan.)

Unveiling the Matriarchal Tapestry

The Philippines is a vibrant tapestry woven together by the unyielding spirit of its women. This piece unravels the profound impact of matriarchy on Filipino society.

The strength, wisdom, and resilience of Filipina women have been woven into the vibrant fabric of Philippine culture for centuries. The piece is a symphony of interconnected threads and patterns that weave together the stories of generations past and present. Each detail pays homage to the diverse roles that Filipino women play within the family, community, and society at large. From nurturing caregivers to visionaries, Filipino women have stood as pillars of strength, driving progress, and fostering an unbreakable unity.

This artwork is a celebration of the rich tapestry woven together by Filipinas– we are reminded that the strength of the Philippines lies not only in its breathtaking landscapes but also in the fierce determination and unwavering devotion of its women.

Embrace and celebrate the matriarchal spirit that beats at the heart of our beautiful country!

Rooted Reverence: Honor the Land that Birthed You

I always stood firmly on the belief that we are in constant connection between ourselves and the land from which we spring forth. This piece calls upon us to recognize and honor the sacred soil that cradles our roots, with the Philippines as its nurturing embrace.

As we gaze upon this piece, we are invited to reflect upon our collective responsibility to safeguard the treasures bestowed upon us by our beautiful and sacred land. Crista implores viewers to embrace practices of purpose and honor the wisdom of our sacred community whose knowledge has sustained our land for generations.

Through this artwork, we are reminded that the Philipines is not merely a place on a map, but a living, breathing entity deserving of our utmost care and appreciation.

Let us heed the call to honor the land that birthed us! Ensuring that its vitality endures for generations to come.
