❤️🐰 BENITO UPDATE: SOMETIMES IT REALLY DOES TAKE A VILLAGE.

Remember the little 5-month-old bunny sitting at Harbor Animal Shelter with the leg that wouldn't support him properly?

The little boy we weren't sure we could responsibly say YES to?

Well... we said YES.

And because so many of YOU said yes with us, Benito is no longer sitting in a shelter.

He is safe. He has been examined. He has had his X-rays. He has a foster home. And, perhaps most beautifully of all, he is HAPPY. ❤️

Yesterday, many of us finally got to meet Benito at our adoption event.

And this little rabbit who has already been through so much?

He stole everyone's hearts.

His temporary foster sent us a message that we haven't been able to stop thinking about:

“He is a very happy, active and affectionate little guy! He flops for pets!”

That's Benito.

Not a diagnosis.

Not a shelter number.

Not a “major medical” case.

A five-month-old baby who flops for pets.

A little boy who wants affection. Who wants to play. Who is thrilled to be alive.

In fact, two people wanted to adopt him yesterday.

Benito isn't ready for adoption yet—but imagine that.

Days ago, we were asking whether we could even get him out of the shelter.

Yesterday, people were falling in love with him.

🩻 SO... WHAT DID THE X-RAYS SHOW?

The answer was not quite what anyone expected.

Benito's right hip is significantly abnormal. The X-rays show that the femoral head—the rounded end of the thigh bone that normally forms the “ball” of the hip's ball-and-socket joint—is essentially missing/flattened.

His left hip is completely normal.

At this point, the veterinarian cannot say with certainty why this happened. It could be congenital—something Benito was born with—or the result of previous trauma or another orthopedic condition.

Importantly, his examination found the abnormal leg non-painful with range of motion, and the X-rays did not identify another fracture or dislocation.

For now, the plan is long-term joint support, careful monitoring, soft padding and lots of love.

And perhaps the most beautiful sentence in Benito's discharge instructions is this:

“This likely won't slow him down.” ❤️

Rabbits can be extraordinary at adapting, particularly when an orthopedic difference develops very early in life. Benito will need careful lifelong monitoring—especially of his other foot for pressure problems—but right now, this little guy seems determined to get on with the business of being a bunny.

Benito now has a committed permanent foster. ❤️

She has asked to remain anonymous, and we will absolutely respect that.

But we can tell you this:

She is a nurse. She is extremely experienced with special-needs rabbits. And she has chosen Benito.

Of all the places this medically complicated little rabbit could have landed, somehow he found exactly the kind of person we dreamed of finding for him.

Sometimes rescue feels impossible.

And sometimes the pieces fall into place so beautifully that all you can do is sit there and cry happy tears.

🐰 BENITO'S JOURNEY ISN'T FINISHED.

He is completing his deworming protocol and needs to gain some weight and strength before his next procedure.

He is scheduled to return to the veterinarian on September 30 for his recheck and, if everything looks good, his neuter. The veterinary team will continue monitoring his hip and determine what he needs as he grows.

There will be more veterinary bills. There will be follow-ups. There will be supplements and potentially additional treatment throughout his life.

So if you would still like to contribute toward Benito's continuing care and the other medical rabbits who come through BWF's doors, donations are deeply appreciated.

But today, more than anything, we just want to say THANK YOU.

🆘💔 BENITO IS ONLY 5 MONTHS OLD. HIS LEG IS BADLY INJURED. AND NOW HE’S SITTING IN A SHELTER.

This is Benito. A2292661.

He is just 5 months old.

Five months.

He should be running, playing, exploring, getting into trouble and discovering what it means to be a bunny.

Instead, Benito is sitting at the Harbor Animal Shelter with a severely abnormal right rear leg that sticks outward and cannot properly support his tiny 2.6-pound body. The shelter has placed him on a Major Medical Alert.

And he was OWNER SURRENDERED.

His family told the shelter they could no longer properly care for him.

We are trying very hard not to judge. We know circumstances change. We know emergencies happen.

But it is incredibly difficult to look at this little boy—injured, vulnerable and only five months into his life—and not ask:

How did we get here?

His own surrender paperwork describes Benito as friendly, affectionate and playful. He likes being petted. He sometimes sits in your lap. The shelter staff say he comes right up to the front of his cage to greet them, seeks attention and allows pets all over.

When his former family was asked what they loved most about Benito, they wrote:

“how playful.”

And now this playful little baby is injured and sitting in a shelter.

💔 WE WANT TO GET HIM OUT.

But we cannot simply pull Benito and hope everything somehow works itself out afterward.

Responsible rescue means having a plan.

The shelter has started Benito on pain medication, but he needs veterinary diagnostics that cannot currently be completed there. We need to get him to a private rabbit-savvy veterinarian for imaging and a complete evaluation.

We do not yet know the extent of the damage.

We don't know whether his leg can be repaired.

We don't know exactly what happened to it.

And we don't know whether the leg can be saved—or whether amputation may ultimately be necessary.

What we do know is that Benito needs help.

🆘 WE NEED FOUR THINGS TO SAY YES TO BENITO:

1️⃣ A PULL VOLUNTEER

Someone who can physically go to Harbor Animal Shelter in San Pedro and help us get Benito out.

2️⃣ TRANSPORT TO THE VETERINARIAN

Once pulled, Benito needs transportation directly to our veterinary team for diagnostics and treatment.

3️⃣ A COMMITTED MEDICAL FOSTER

This is critical.

We need someone who can provide Benito with a safe, quiet indoor environment while he undergoes treatment and recovery. If surgery is necessary, his foster will be an essential part of his rehabilitation.

4️⃣ FUNDS. LOTS OF THEM. 💔

We wish we could soften this part, but we can't.

We anticipate that diagnostics, examination and imaging alone could approach $1,000.

If Benito requires major orthopedic treatment or an amputation, we could easily be looking at another $3,000 or more.

Add medication, follow-up examinations, post-operative care and everything else involved in getting a severely injured rabbit healthy again, and Benito's case could reach $5,000.

We don't have $5,000 sitting around waiting for the next emergency.

And Benito isn't the only rabbit who needs us.

That is why we cannot pull irresponsibly.

We cannot take him from the shelter without knowing that there will be a foster waiting for him, transportation to get him where he needs to go, and a community willing to help us pay for his medical care.

But look at his face.

Look at those enormous ears.

Look at this tiny little boy who has already found himself injured and homeless before he is even six months old.

His life should not be over before it has really begun.

Benito doesn't know what an owner surrender is.

He doesn't know what a medical estimate is.

He doesn't know that rescue organizations have limits.

He only knows that his leg hurts, the people he knew are gone, and he is somewhere unfamiliar.

We want the next door Benito goes through to be the door to his new life.

But we need you to help us open it.

🧬🐰 GLOW-IN-THE-DARK RABBITS? THIS ISN'T SCIENCE FICTION.

Sadly, this is real.

Scientists and commercial breeders are already experimenting with genetically modifying companion animals for purely cosmetic purposes—including rabbits whose DNA has been altered to make them glow in the dark.

At Bunny World Foundation, we believe rabbits are not novelty items, collectibles, or living science experiments. They are intelligent, sensitive, emotional beings who deserve compassion and respect—not genetic manipulation for someone's amusement or profit.

Meanwhile, California shelters are already overwhelmed. Every week, we rescue abandoned rabbits from animal shelters, parks, backyards, and neglect cases. Thousands of healthy rabbits lose their homes every year because people purchase animals on impulse and then discard them when the novelty wears off.

💔🐰 TOMORROW DOESN'T HAVE TO BE CAPITÁN CRUNCH'S LAST DAY. 🐰💔

This little boy is only 13 weeks old.

His name is Capitán Crunch.

On July 5, just one day after Independence Day, this tiny baby arrived at Los Angeles Animal Services fighting for his life.

He weighed only 1 pound.

His body temperature had dropped to just 96.7°F.

He was emaciated, hungry, weak, and struggling simply to survive.

And somehow... he still hasn't given up.

Animal Control reached out to Bunny World Foundation, hoping we could help before it was too late.

This was the message we received:

"13-week-old rabbit presents very underweight and with an initial low body temperature. Under supportive care at this time. If there is no rescue response by 4:00 PM on 7/11/26, the rabbit will be euthanized that day."

💔 Tomorrow is that day.

Capitán Crunch is a beautiful Harlequin Holland Lop with his whole life ahead of him.

Everything about this little boy suggests he was once someone's beloved pet. At just 13 weeks old, he arrived at the shelter intact, with no microchip, and no indication that he had received the veterinary care every rabbit deserves.

Instead of being cherished, he ended up abandoned, desperately underweight, and fighting for his life.

We don't yet know exactly what's wrong.

He may be suffering from severe malnutrition.

He may have a heavy parasite load.

He may have an underlying dental disease requiring treatment.

We won't know until we can get him to our veterinarian.

☀️🐰 SUNNY NEEDS A FOSTER TODAY! 🐰☀️

Yesterday, someone abandoned this precious little orange-and-white Dutch baby at Los Angeles Animal Services.

Her name is Sunny.

She is only 4 weeks old.

At four weeks old, she should still be discovering the world—not trying to survive it.

Instead of spending her babyhood snuggled beside her family, Sunny spent yesterday alone in a shelter kennel, wondering why no one came back for her.

Animal Control reached out to Bunny World Foundation and our fellow New Hope Partners, hoping someone could save her before it's too late.

Today alone, Bunny World Foundation is racing against the clock to save FIVE rabbits on death row from FIVE different Southern California shelters. Sunny is just the first of today's emergency pleas.

We've also received hundreds of messages asking about Jazzy, Benny, Sherpy, and the other rabbits we've posted recently.

That means we sometimes have to say no to outdoor hutches, homes with incompatible circumstances, or locations that are simply too far away for a critically ill baby who may need emergency veterinary care.

It isn't because we don't appreciate your willingness to help.

It's because every decision we make is about giving these rabbits the very best chance at a long, healthy life.

If you're in L.A., you’ve already heard the BOOMS, BANGS, and random kabooms shaking the streets. And yes, it’s just getting started. Welcome to the annual chaos we lovingly call...
🎆 The War Zone Formerly Known as Independence Day.

💔 But while some cheer the noise, our animal friends are living a nightmare. Fireworks are NOT festive for wildlife or pets — they’re traumatizing, toxic, and often fatal.

🚫✨ Please skip the fireworks this year. It's not celebration — it's devastation.

🌿 Wildlife doesn’t do well with “shock and awe.”
Our city is home to countless animals — birds, bunnies, deer, squirrels, raccoons, coyotes, opossums, ducks, geese... even fish! The explosions cause birds to literally fall dead from the sky. Moms flee in panic, abandoning their babies. Fires ignite. Waters get poisoned. All for five minutes of oohs and ahhs.

🐰 Bunnies especially suffer.
Their hearing is sharper than yours by a long shot (seriously, like superhero-level sharp). That firework you “barely noticed”? It was a sonic bomb to your rabbit.

🔊 Stress leads to panic. Panic leads to injury, escape attempts, and even deadly G.I. stasis — a silent killer in rabbits. Vision-impaired buns are at even greater risk.

✅ How to protect your bunny this July 4:

🔒 Keep them indoors — windows & doors CLOSED
🎶 Play soft music or TV to drown out the madness
🕳️ Provide hidey-holes, tunnels, & snacks in safe spots
🥗 Serve a big, leafy salad + pile up the hay
🧸 Offer chew toys or fun enrichment
💨 Keep it cool: AC, fans, frozen water bottles
💉 Microchip your buns — and double-check the registration
🍓 Try a “treat test” — if they refuse a favorite treat, it’s vet time
🐰 Never leave a blind or nervous bunny alone during fireworks
🫂 And most importantly: Cuddle like it’s the end of the world (because to them, it kind of feels like it is).

❤️ Thank you for being a voice of compassion during a time when it’s needed most. Together, we can make this Independence Day a little less terrifying for those with fur, feathers, and fins.

Just hours before the Fourth of July holiday, someone dumped a tiny baby bunny weighing less than HALF A POUND at West Valley Animal Shelter in Los Angeles (LA Animal Services).

At 7:30 PM tonight, Animal Control reached out to Bunny World Foundation with an urgent plea:

"We just received a very young bunny needing immediate help. If you are able to rescue this bunny or have space available, please let us know as soon as possible. Time is of the essence for one this young, and we want to ensure it gets the care it needs." 🐾

Our hearts said YES immediately.

But rescue is only possible if we have the people to make it happen.

Right now, Sherpy needs:

🚗 A transporter to help get Sherpy safely from West Valley Animal Shelter in Los Angeles
