This past week was everything we hoped it would be and more. ☀️🏕️🩳🩱🌊🎣📍🏞️🥾🚣🏽‍♂️⛰️🗺️🪵

Our teens kayaked across Bass Lake, explored Yosemite National Park, hiked the Lewis and Clark Trail, toured the campuses of Saint Mary’s College of California and UC Berkeley, shared family dinners, stayed up for game nights, laughed until their stomachs hurt, and made memories we’ll be talking about for years to come.

For many of our teens, these were brand-new experiences. And that’s exactly why we do this.

At A Place For Youth, we believe every teen deserves the opportunity to explore, be inspired, and experience a world beyond what they’ve always known. When teens step outside their comfort zones, visit new places, and see what’s possible, they begin to realize those opportunities belong to them too. Whether it’s standing on a college campus, hiking through a national park, or simply discovering something new about themselves, every experience builds confidence, broadens perspective, and inspires bigger dreams.

These are the moments that remind us why this work matters.

This was our first Sleepaway Camp, but it certainly won’t be our last. We can’t wait to make this an APFY tradition—creating unforgettable experiences that inspire our teens to dream bigger, go farther, and believe in everything they’re capable of.

Here’s to the first of many adventures. 💛 🌄

From inspiring young minds to empowering future leaders. 💛

What an incredible week welcoming our Junior Explorers (ages 6–12) to A Place For Youth! Our center was filled with creativity, teamwork, laughter, and hands-on learning—but the true highlight was watching our teens step into leadership as mentors and role models for the next generation.

Thank you to every family who joined us. We already can’t wait for our next Junior Explorer event! 🌟

Here’s to another year of inspiring young minds, empowering future leaders, and building community. ✨

☀️ Leadership Week is officially in the books, and what an incredible way to wrap it up!

Throughout the week, our teens strengthened the skills that great leaders are made of—communication, teamwork, problem-solving, professionalism, service, and confidence. They challenged themselves in the kitchen with Chef Kenzie | Catering & Private Chef, supported one another, and prepared to step into the role of Guidance Counselors-in-Training and Junior Camp Volunteers.

To celebrate all of their hard work, we wrapped up the week with a day of adventure at Knott’s Berry Farm. A special thank you to The Outdoor Initiative, Inc for making the adventure possible! 🎢

Today, we welcomed 20 amazing campers ages 6–12 for APFY Junior Camp!🍦This year’s theme is Froyo, and our young entrepreneurs wasted no time launching their frozen yogurt businesses, creating specialty menus on a budget, and designing their Froyo Courier Robots and Sprinkle Slingers!!! 🍨🤖

This week is about more than fun projects—it’s about our teens putting their leadership into action by mentoring younger students, leading activities, and growing alongside them.

We can’t wait to watch our teen leaders and junior campers continue learning, creating, and making memories all week long. 💙

Four weeks down, and what a summer it’s been. ☀️

Our teens have stepped outside the classroom and into the real world—exploring career pathways, college admissions, FAFSA and scholarships, SAT prep, resume building, interview skills, financial planning, research and debate, and hands-on challenges that turned learning into friendly competition.

Thank you to our amazing staff, volunteers, and community partners—thank you for making APFY a place where teens feel welcomed, challenged, encouraged, and inspired every single day. 💛

To the incredible UCLA pre-med student volunteers and EMTs from Life Initiative for leading our emergency preparedness and health education series. Our teens gained hands-on experience in CPR, first aid, fire and water safety, mental health, sports injuries, caregiving, substance abuse prevention, and explored careers in medicine and emergency response. The best way to build a healthier community is through education, preparedness, and prevention. 🫀🫶🏽

To LAFD Station 94 for stopping by with a hands-on fire safety demonstration. We hope to see you again soon! 🔥🧯

To Mr. J for introducing our teens to graphic design through Adobe Creative Cloud Photoshop. From designing FIFA-inspired logos and merchandise to learning how design supports marketing, branding, presentations, and business pitches, our students gained creative skills they’ll carry into college, future careers, and beyond. We can’t wait to share their incredible work! 🎨💻✨

But we’re not done yet! Next up, our teens are still cooking up more (s/o Chef Kenzie 👩🏾‍🍳) & diving deeper into leadership, taking on even more life skills hands-on experiences.

Summer may be flying by, but the fun doesn’t stop here. Keep following along as we wrap up camp and details about our upcoming after-school program soon. 💛

Our summer adventures officially began where the mountains meet the sea. 🌊🏄🏾☀️

We were honored to kick off the season with an unforgettable day at the beach thanks to the Black Surfers Collective for their 14th Annual Nick Gabaldón Day—a celebration that is about so much more than surfing.

Nick Gabaldón was California’s first documented Black surfer of African American and Mexican American descent. At a time when segregation limited who could access many of Southern California’s beaches, he courageously pursued his love of the ocean, breaking barriers and inspiring generations that followed. Today, carries that legacy forward by creating opportunities for youth to experience the ocean and discover that they belong in every space.

For many of our teens, this was their first time surfing, stepping outside their comfort zone, meeting new mentors, and creating memories they’ll carry with them for years to come.

A huge thank you to the BSC Team, every volunteer, instructor, and supporter who welcomed our students with open arms. Days like these remind us that some of the most meaningful work happens beyond the classroom and that there is an entire community working to empower our next generation.

Next up: Summer Recap Part 1! We can’t wait to share what’s been keeping our teens busy. 💛🤙🏾

The school year isn’t always easy—but watching our students grow in confidence, character, and community makes every challenge worth it. 💙

Our teens work incredibly hard throughout the school year. They show up, stay committed, support one another, and continuously challenge themselves to become better students, leaders, and community members.

At APFY, we believe a student’s education extends far beyond the classroom. Alongside academics, we intentionally create opportunities for our students to serve their community, explore new places, build meaningful relationships, and simply enjoy being teenagers. These experiences help them recharge, gain confidence, and return ready for the next challenge.

Before we share our Summer Camp Part 1 Recap, we wanted to look back at some of our favorite Spring Escape adventures:
🎢 Knott’s Berry Farm with
🐠 in Long Beach, CA
🌳 Picnic and Play in Culver City
🐮 A Day on the Farm Rancho San Pedro hosted by the Rodriguez Family
🌊 Adventure on the E-Line to

These aren’t just field trips—they’re opportunities to create lifelong memories, remind our students that hard work deserves to be celebrated, and that some of life’s greatest lessons happen outside the classroom.

We couldn’t be prouder of this group and all they accomplished this year. Summer Camp Part 1 is up next! ☀️
