Join us on Saturday, October 24, at 7:00 p.m. PDT as we commemorate the 155th anniversary of the Los Angeles Chinese Massacre of 1871. Attend in person or online as we come together to remember the 18 lives lost and reflect on this significant moment in American history.

This year marks 155 years since a racially motivated mob of approximately 500 Angelenos descended upon a predominantly Chinese neighborhood in Los Angeles, attacking residents and looting homes and businesses. The violence claimed the lives of 18 victims, including a young boy. Although eight perpetrators were convicted for their involvement, those convictions were overturned the following year.

The events of October 24, 1871, unfolded on the very doorsteps of what is now the Chinese American Museum. Since 2010, CAM has commemorated this date as an important part of Los Angeles and American history. We continue to honor the lives lost, remember the history, and create space for reflection and dialogue on the enduring issues of race, xenophobia, and violence.

This year’s 155th anniversary commemoration will include:

- A candlelight vigil led by Dr. Gay Yuen, Board Chair of the Friends of the Chinese American Museum, followed by a traditional Chinese bowing ceremony honoring the victims
- Keynote remarks from special guest speakers

Join the Chinese American Museum and Ms. Rita from the Los Angeles Public Library’s Chinatown branch for a very special Kids’ Storytime event on Thursday, October 8th, at 4pm as we celebrate Filipino American History Month!

For this month’s storytime, we will be joined by children’s book author and Emmy-nominated journalist, Carren Jao, who will be reading her new book "The Shape of Love" in celebration of Filipino American History Month.

This book is suitable for ages 5-12, though we welcome children of all ages, including parents!

About the author:

Carren Jao is an award-winning Chinese Filipina storyteller and Emmy-nominated journalist born and raised in the Philippines. A longtime Angeleno, she is passionate about finding the common threads that connect people across cultures. Her writing is inspired by her own multigenerational immigrant experience and growing up between cultures. Jao is also member of the Authors Guild and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. She was named a 2023 PB Rising Star and received Lee & Low’s 2022 New Voices Award. An avid traveler, she has been fortunate to exchange stories with people around the world.

Jao now lives in the greater Seattle area with her husband and their two children. She wrote The Shape of Love in celebration of the balikbayan box, inspired by the distinct scent of a freshly opened box and the joyful memories of digging through these cardboard treasure chests filled with gifts from loved ones.

Corinne Caro is a concept artist and illustrator based in the Philippines who specializes in creating stylized environments for games and animation. Her clients include Yarn Owl Studios, Ankama, Pencilmation, Riyo Games, Sauropod Studio, Bandai Namco, Critical Role, and L99 Games, among others.

For Corinne, The Shape of Love carries a special personal resonance. As a child, she looked forward to receiving balikbayan boxes from relatives working abroad. Those memories continue to inspire her connection to the story and its celebration of love, family, and the enduring Filipino tradition of the balikbayan box.

On Monday, October 19, at 7:30 PM CAM and the Ebell of Los Angeles will co-present a special live musical production of "Never Forget: 1871" by award-winning composer, Nathan Wang.

"Never Forget: 1871" offers a powerful musical retelling of the Chinese Massacre of 1871, one of the darkest and often overlooked chapters in LA History. Featuring a blend of Western and traditional Chinese instruments, this moving production combines music, storytelling, and history to honor the lives and experiences of the Chinese immigrants in 19th century Los Angeles, and to remind us why their stories must never be forgotten.

The October 19th live event will be held at the Ebell of Los Angeles (743 S Lucerne Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90005) and will include a special presentation offering additional historic context and perspective on the events that transpired in 1871.

She holds an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and is a recipient of the Charles Addams Memorial Prize. She now lives in Midcoast Maine with her husband, son, and their dog, Pamela.

The annual GOLD STANDARD Open Mic, presented by Palms Up Academy in partnership with the Chinese American Museum, celebrates its fifth year! Curated by arianna lady basco, founder of Palms Up Academy, the evening brings together a diverse lineup of Asian voices exploring how we navigate ongoing injustice, protect our peace, and find resilience during turbulent times. The program features AAPI artists and Solidarity Speakers in a powerful night of poetry, music, and spoken word. Featured artists include lady basco, MADIMA, DRE MAGIX, CHAI, LOWHI, Shannon Thomas, MaJiK MC, ROR x FIX, FRAN, and special guest, Shihan Van Clief.

While the evening features a curated lineup of storytellers, audience members are also invited to share their own journeys during our open mic. To participate, please arrive early to sign up. Selected speakers will be called throughout the program and will have a 3-minute time limit.

Join the Chinese American Museum on Friday, August 21st, at the historic Pico House (424 N. Main St.) for a special screening of "Edmund Soohoo: The Heart of Chinatown." Following its sold-out world premiere at the 42nd Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, this heartfelt documentary, directed by Walt Louie, celebrates the life, legacy, and enduring contributions of Edmund Soohoo, whose dedication helped shape and strengthen the Los Angeles Chinatown community.

The Heart of Chinatown pays tribute to Edmund Soohoo, a lifelong resident of Los Angeles Chinatown who dedicated himself to preserving and strengthening the community he proudly called home. After losing his father at a young age, Edmund and his mother persevered through hardship, experiences that shaped his lifelong commitment to service and his belief in the power of community.

Following Edmund’s unexpected passing in 2024, family, friends, and community members came together to share their memories, creating an intimate portrait of a man whose generosity, quiet leadership, and ability to bring people together left a lasting impact. Through their stories, The Heart of Chinatown honors an ordinary man who accomplished extraordinary things, celebrating the resilience, compassion, and enduring spirit that helped shape generations of Los Angeles Chinatown.
