About the book:
When Mei Mei accidentally breaks her Ah Ma’s favorite cup, she’s terrified of what will happen when she is found out. Will Ah Ma be angry and send Mei Mei away? Scared of what will happen, Mei Mei initially keeps the accident a secret. But when her innocent cat, Mimi, is blamed for the broken cup, Mei Mei’s guilt becomes impossible to ignore. About the author:
X. Fang is an award-winning Taiwanese American illustrator, visual artist, and author children’s books. Born in Taichung, Taiwan, and raised in Doraville, Georgia, Fang’s works are celebrated for their imagination, vibrant artwork, and culture. She holds an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and is a recipient of the Charles Addams Memorial Prize. She now lives in Midcoast Maine with her husband, son, and their dog, Pamela.

作者簡介：
方選如 (X. Fang) 是一位屢獲殊榮的台裔美籍插畫家、視覺藝術家兼童書作家。她出生於台灣台中，在美國喬治亞州多拉維爾 (Doraville)長大。方選如的作品以豐富的想像力、充滿活力的藝術風格和深厚的文化底蘊而備受讚譽。她擁有賓州大學藝術碩士 (MFA) 學位，並曾榮獲查理斯。她目前與丈夫、兒子及愛犬帕梅拉 (Pamela) 一同居住在緬因州中海岸地區。

The annual GOLD STANDARD Open Mic, presented by Palms Up Academy in partnership with the Chinese American Museum, celebrates its fifth year! Join us on Friday, August 14, at 6:30 PM at the Historic Pico House for an evening of performance and poetry. RSVP at https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/fcamla/gold-standard.

Curated by arianna lady basco, founder of Palms Up Academy, the evening brings together a diverse lineup of Asian voices exploring how we navigate ongoing injustice, protect our peace, and find resilience during turbulent times. The program features AAPI artists and Solidarity Speakers in a powerful night of poetry, music, and spoken word. Featured artists include lady basco, MADIMA, DRE MAGIX, CHAI, LOWHI, Shannon Thomas, MaJiK MC, ROR x FIX, FRAN, and special guest, Shihan Van Clief.

While the evening features a curated lineup of storytellers, audience members are also invited to share their own journeys during our open mic. To participate, please arrive early to sign up. Selected speakers will be called throughout the program and will have a 3-minute time limit.

Join the Chinese American Museum on Friday, August 21st, at the historic Pico House (424 N. Main St.) for a special screening of "Edmund Soohoo: The Heart of Chinatown." Following its sold-out world premiere at the 42nd Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, this heartfelt documentary, directed by Walt Louie, celebrates the life, legacy, and enduring contributions of Edmund Soohoo, whose dedication helped shape and strengthen the Los Angeles Chinatown community.

For this screening, a pre-reception will be held at 6 pm with the screening starting at 7 pm.

About the Documentary:
The Heart of Chinatown pays tribute to Edmund Soohoo, a lifelong resident of Los Angeles Chinatown who dedicated himself to preserving and strengthening the community he proudly called home. After losing his father at a young age, Edmund and his mother persevered through hardship, experiences that shaped his lifelong commitment to service and his belief in the power of community.

Following Edmund’s unexpected passing in 2024, family, friends, and community members came together to share their memories, creating an intimate portrait of a man whose generosity, quiet leadership, and ability to bring people together left a lasting impact. Through their stories, The Heart of Chinatown honors an ordinary man who accomplished extraordinary things, celebrating the resilience, compassion, and enduring spirit that helped shape generations of Los Angeles Chinatown.

Are you the type of person that wanders through vintage stops or photo archives wondering about the stories behind each object? Do you have a box of found objects, old photographs, or paper scraps that you’ve been saving for that one project some day?

Join the Chinese American Museum on Thursday, July 23, from 6 – 8 PM for From Picture to Poem, a generative poetry workshop inspired by artifacts from the museum’s archives. Using these historical materials as creative prompts, participants will explore collaging to create “found” writing in different hybrid writing styles and modalities. Through a series of playful writing exercises, participants will also experiment with new ways to find inspiration, connect with community history, and transform archival images (and stories) into original works of art.

Attendees will walk away with three pieces of visual poetry that combine their own words and sentiments with images from the CAM archives.

**This workshop is hosted and lead by Taz Ahmed and jason chu, artists featured in CAM’s current exhibition, (Be)Spoken: Poems from Our Asian American Voices. Spaces in the workshop may be limited.

About the Workshop Leads:

jason chu is a prominent rapper and activist in the national Asian American scene. He’s been heard in movies, TV shows, and video games including Warrior, American Born Chinese, Joy Ride, and Valorant. As a content creator, jason’s videos on history, society, and culture regularly go viral. He’s worked with the LA Mayor’s Office, and serves as guest curator of the (Be)Spoken exhibition at the Chinese American Museum.

Tanzila “Taz” Ahmed is a political strategist, storyteller, and artist based in Los Angeles. An Active writer, both her essays and poetry have been published in numerous publications and collections. Her latest poetry collection “Grasping At This Planet Just to Believe” was published April 2024 with Writ Large Projects.

你是否喜歡流連古董店或翻閱照片時，好奇每件物品背後隱藏的故事？你是否也收藏了一盒「拾得物」、舊照片或紙片，期待日後用於某個創作項目之中？

歡迎於7月23日（星期四）晚上6時至8時，參加華美博物館舉辦的「從圖片到詩歌」工作坊，這是一場以博物館館藏文物為靈感的詩歌創作活動。參與者將以這些歷史資料作為創作靈感，透過拼貼手法，創作出融合不同文體與形式的「現成」文學。在一系列輕鬆有趣的寫作練習中，參與者也將嘗試新的創作方式，從社群歷史中汲取靈感，並將檔案影像與其背後的故事轉化為獨一無二的藝術作品。

活動結束後，每位參與者將帶走三件視覺詩歌作品，這些作品融合了參與者個人的文字與情感，以及來自華美博物館檔案庫的珍貴圖像。

About the illustrator:
A.N. Kang, also known as Anna Kang, is an author-illustrator born and raised in Korea. She emigrated to the USA at the age of 18 where she began her career designing giftware, jewelry, home décor, greeting cards, and large-scale holiday installations across New York City.
