On June 13, 2026, from 5–8 PM, The Judith Center and Just Detention International (JDI) will open From the Inside, an exhibition featuring nearly one hundred works by individuals who have experienced trauma behind bars, including those who have been subjected to sexual abuse while incarcerated. From the Inside mainly showcases pieces by artists incarcerated in three state prisons: the California Institution for Men, the California Institution for Women, and the California Rehabilitation Center. Most of the artists are current and former participants in ther**eutic art workshops led by Just Detention International, which provide a space for incarcerated people to process trauma through creative expression. The pieces that emerge from this program reveal the devastating and personal impacts of the criminal legal system, but also propose how visual art can serve as a powerful tool while bearing witness to injustice. Presented alongside first-hand narratives written by program participants, the exhibition features drawings and paintings on canvas executed using prison-approved materials, including watercolors, paper, oil pastels, and acrylic paint. Also on view are sculptures made from mixed materials sourced from prison yards, such as food wrappers, small rocks, discarded cardboard, and leftover industrial paint. Wide-ranging in subject, this body of work centers voices that are too often excluded from public and cultural discourse. After the opening, this exhibition is free and open to the public by appointment. For more information, contact [email protected].

Incarceration carries an intense stigma — especially for mothers. JDI runs programs inside prisons and jails to help moms process difficult feelings of self-blame for not being there for their kids. But here's the thing: the blame lies with a system that separates parents from their families. The moms we work with are wonderful and strong parents. On 'sDay, let's honor the incarcerated moms behind bars, and fight for a world in which families are together.

The many thousands of incarcerated people who work are paid poorly and often face dangerous conditions. Sexual abuse on the job is also common. A 2024 investigation by the Associated Press uncovered instances of incarcerated women who were sexually abused in all 50 states. On , let's keep in mind the incarcerated people who work — and who are just as deserving of labor rights as people on the outside.

Advocates are heroes. Their commitment to helping all survivors — even survivors who are incarcerated, like Richard — is part of what makes the movement to end sexual assault so strong. Our movement has to keep supporting every person who needs it, without judgment. Because every person, no matter what crime they may have committed, deserves to be safe.

It's National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. It's an opportunity to remember that all crime victims have a right to dignity and must be supported. Including people who are victimized while they are incarcerated.

Young people have a role to play in speaking out against sexual abuse and promoting respect. Students and youth groups have always been deeply involved in JDI's Words of Hope, where we invite our supporters to send compassionate holiday greetings to incarcerated people.
