: Eugene Lee Yang, Armed With a Camera ⭐️

Before he was a Try Guy, he was an AWC Fellow. Producer, actor, director, and writer Eugene Lee Yang is one of today’s most recognizable q***r Asian American performers, with his work as a digital producer on The Try Guys and Buzzfeed receiving billions of views, distinguishing him as a preeminent culturally influential Youtube creator.

Known for his unique cinematic point of view, his 2014 AWC project, COMFORT GIRLS, seamlessly blends narrative, dance, and contemporary social issues. COMFORT GIRLS is a satirical K-pop music video that explores the historical abuse of Korean women by male imperialists, all while singing and dancing to a modern, K-pop song.

Since his Fellowship, Eugene starred in Netflix's Nimona in 2023 and is now currently developing a YA book and graphic novel.

: Barbara Kagawa Shore, Digital Histories ⭐️

Barbara has developed five short films under the Digital Histories media production program. As a Sansei filmmaker, Barbara's films highlight her family histories and the Japanese American community in Los Angeles.

Her 2023 Digital Histories film, MISSING PIECES delves into Barbara's journey to reveal the truth about the deaths of her family members when they were in camp. In her search for the truth, she discovered that a total of 1,862 Japanese Americans had died in the 10 War Relocation Authority camps.

“Making this film has been a cathartic experience. Sometimes speaking the truth out into the world is like releasing trapped spirits from the past. 1,862. Remember them. Honor them. Do not let them be forgotten.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the sold-out screening of EDMUND SOOHOO: THE HEART OF CHINATOWN at Pico House, presented in partnership with the Chinese American Museum 🎥

Last Friday, we celebrated the life and legacy of Edmund Soohoo, who passed away in 2024. Surrounded by Edmund's family, friends, and community, the event was filled with so many stories, memories, and love as we reflected on Edmund's impact on Los Angeles Chinatown.

We’re grateful to everyone who attended and to all who continue to keep Edmund’s legacy alive 🤍

: Lauren To'omalatai, Armed With a Camera ⭐️

Lauren To'omalata is a Sāmoan writer, filmmaker, and programmer from Salt Lake City, Utah. She co-founded the Māsima Film Festival with the Salt Lake Film Society and currently works at the Utah Film Center. The Māsima Film Festival centers Pacific Islander filmmakers and stories, elevating PI voices in Utah. She was part of our first all-Pasifika cohort of Armed With a Camera (2022-2023). Her AWC project SNACK was screened at several film festivals nationwide including QWOCFF, LA Skins, and PAAFF.

Remembering Edmund Soohoo (1949-2024) 🤍

This year, we honored Edmund, a beloved community friend and trailblazer in the LA Chinatown community, by producing and premiering EDMUND SOOHOO: THE HEART OF CHINATOWN at . A theater filled with Edmund's friends, family, and the people he made an impact on, we were overjoyed with the reception.

: Steve Nagano, Digital Histories ⭐️

Longtime Little Tokyo resident and community activist with NCRR, Little Tokyo Historical Society, and Nikkei Progressives , Steve has been involved with the Digital Histories media production program for older adults since 2011. In addition to screening at , his films have been presented at various community events and universities.

Steve's 2020 DH project, highlights the annual Little Tokyo Sparkle/Nancy Kikuchi Volunteer Day that brings together the community to clean the neighborhood. Starting in 2016, their goal was to preserve the rich culture and history of the area through annual cleanups. The Sparkle community has continued to expand every year thanks to the participation of diverse groups, businesses, and organizations. There are now over 440 volunteers that come out to help pick up trash, wash windows, wipe graffiti, and more. It is a day dedicated to bonding over the love for Little Tokyo and making a difference.

"As a minority media arts organization, VC plays a huge role in our community as a keeper of our experiences, a storyteller of our histories, and a definer of our culture. VC makes the invisible, visible, and as you can tell, means volumes to me."

Did you know our media production program for older adults is completely FREE for participants? 🤯

Since 2003, Digital Histories has provided older Asian Pacific Americans the opportunity to learn filmmaking and media production while creating meaningful connections with peers in the Los Angeles area.

🎥 This year, our 2026 Digital Histories premiered an unprecedented 16 short films at . 16 unique stories brought to life through the Digital Histories program!

Keeping this program free means that our storytellers can participate without financial barriers. But making this work possible takes community support.

As part of our Storytellers in Movement campaign, we’re raising $50,000 to sustain our artist development programs, including Digital Histories! Help us continue providing older adults with the mentorship, resources, and creative space to tell their stories.

These stories deserve to keep moving from one generation to the next.

: Jeff Man, Armed With a Camera ⭐️

A Maryland-raised, now, Oklahoma-based filmmaker, Jeff Man attributes his success as an artist to the community and friends he made through VC and his 2012 AWC Fellowship. "AWC was a big deal for me. Up until that point I was pretty new to LA, looking to build my community and make friends. Most of the people that I am working with these days are friends that I met at VC and are former AWC fellows."

Post-Fellowship, Jeff went on to write, direct, and star in his first feature-length film, PAPER MARRIAGE, which premiered at the 2024 . The film went on to play at several other Festivals like AAIFF, SDAFF, and HAAPIFEST and is now available to stream on Amazon and AppleTV.

"Back in 2011, VC offered me a box office gig for LAAPFF and I happily accepted right away. The year before, I stuffed all of my things into a car and drove across the country hoping to get a chance to work in the film industry; and the only job I could get was working at Best Buy. Every short film I’ve made the past 6 years has premiered at LAAPFF. For aspiring filmmakers, VC offers us a home and the opportunity to showcase our voice to a large audience. Thanks to VC, I’ll never have to sell another Geek Squad protection plan ever again and I’m forever grateful for that."
