: Joe Virata, Digital Histories ⭐️

Educator, activist, organizer, FANHS Trustee, Joe Virata is an American-born Pinoy, who has wrestled with finding identity while straddling two cultures. In his retirement years, he seeks ways to nurture creativity in his life, writing, playing music, and making films!

Joe's 2023 Digital Histories film, PROFITS ENSLAVE THE WORLD, follows Philip Vera Cruz’ poem that was put to music by Chris Bautista, a young Bay Area musician. The song became an anthem amongst many Filipinos of the time, connecting them with the generations of organizers who came before.

There will be an exclusive live musical performance Chris and Joe at the Storytellers in Movement Fundraiser on 10/17 🎶

We value the AANHPI stories that create impact and spark inspiration, and we want those stories to reach as many people as possible. When we come together to experience stories, we strengthen our connections to one another, deepen our understanding, and build solidarity across communities. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to experience and connect with the stories being created in our communities.

: Kristina Wong, Armed With a Camera ⭐️

Performance artist, comedian, writer, AWC Alum, and VC's very own Nicole Kidman. Kristina describes her aesthetic as “subversive, humorous, and endearingly inappropriate”, employing humor to address difficult subjects, social issues, and amplify marginalized experiences.

"I feel so grateful that Armed With a Camera gave me the opportunity to flex my muscles as a young just out-of-college storyteller, work with a cohort of other young filmmakers, and have a structured and nurturing space to develop this work."

This past Saturday, September 26, Visual Communications was honored to host the closing social for the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture (LACDAC) Internship Summit! This year, LACDAC partnered with Community Arts Resources (CARS) to ground the entire day in Little Tokyo.

Over 60 interns and their supervisors from sites all across LA County gathered together at the Union Center for the Arts over mochi from Fugetsu-Do, along with fruit and pastries catered from Far Bar. Afterwards, folks were encouraged to wander the historic building, catching a glimpse of Esther J. Lee’s exhibition Homing at LA Artcore and exploring the Visual Communications office. Our current LACDAC intern Alyssa Agudelo, their supervisor Angela J. Park, along with former LACDAC interns Emma Fukunaga (VC Programs Associate) and Jason Tiangco (VC Archives Manager), walked guests through our space, our exhibitions, and the VC Archives, showcasing AANHPI stories and the history of VC.

Thank you to the CARS and LACDAC teams for including VC in this year’s Summit!

: Florante Peter Ibañez, Digital Histories ⭐️

Florante was a life-long scholar activist and pioneering voice for Filipino Americans. He was exceptionally dedicated to serving the community to bring about social justice and transformation. He co-founded UCLA’s Samahang Pilipino and UCI’s Kababayan, co-authored the book “Filipinos in Carson and the South Bay” with his wife, Roselyn, and established the Florante Peter Ibañez Collection at CSU Dominguez Hills, documenting Filipino American history, culture, activism, and community events from the 1940s through the 2020s. Florante was instrumental to the anti-Martial Law movement in the US as part of Katipunan ng mga Demokratikong Pilipino (KDP). He was always eager to contribute his time to volunteer work to many organizations.

Before his passing in November 2025, Florante joined the Digital Histories Program from 2024 and 2025. His last film, FWC LEGACY, follows the Filipino People's Far West Convention from 1971-1984.

Take Me Home debuted at Sundance Film Festival 2026 and went on to play at Berlinale - Berlin International Film Festival and Tribeca. Liz's short film, also titled Take Me Home, played at ! We're thrilled to continue supporting Liz and the Take Me Home team!

ABOUT THE FILM
Anna (Anna Sargent making her acting debut), a middle-aged Korean adoptee with a cognitive disability, cares for her aging parents in a fragile balance of meeting one another’s needs. Alongside her sister Emily (Ali Ahn) and her father (Victor Slezak), they must confront challenging questions about the future, but Anna remains determined to build a life where all of them can thrive.
