56 years ago, LAJS member Ira Nepus met a young trombonist in Tokyo named Akira Ohara after a concert with Woody Herman, Thelonious Monk, and Carmen McRae. This July, Akira — now celebrating his 80th birthday and the 30th anniversary of his big band, Swing Bacchus — flew Ira back to Tokyo as guest soloist.
A week of rehearsals, a sold-out concert, and a friendship that's outlasted five decades.
