Mike Neumeyer brought something special to the Vibe Summit stage. His marimba and vibraphone work felt airy, light, and genuinely magical, the kind of set that stays with you. A Milwaukee-based composer, educator, and Marimba One Educational Artist, Mike has recorded albums like "Cloud Nine" and "Comprovisations" and brings that same artistry to every performance. Every year, the Jeff Clayton Memorial New Note Award asks a rising jazz composer one bold question: what new music do you want to leave behind? Five composers. Five visions.
The answers have been unforgettable.
🎹 Richard Sears (pianist) β€” the very first recipient. A 45-minute suite honoring drum legend Tootie Heath. Premiered at the John Anson Ford Theatre to a standing ovation and a glowing LA Times review.
🎷 Josh Johnson (alto saxophonist) β€” a deeply personal LA piece centered on the 1992 Rodney King riots.
🎷 Nicole McCabe (alto saxophonist, USC Thornton) β€” "The Women Who Shaped Me," a suite for septet inspired by the women who made her who she is.
🎷 Ennis Harris (alto saxophonist) β€” "Images & Silhouettes," a 35-minute suite for a 17-piece ensemble blending chamber strings with big band.
🎻 Yafeu Tyhimba (bassist) β€” a suite told through an AI character who leaves Earth in search of something better.
