We lost Plas Johnson last Wednesday, 6 days shy of his 95th birthday.

Plas was truly a very special musician, teacher and friend to so many, and one of the most humble humans of talent and excellence that we have ever known, in any field. He was a very special friend and bandmate of Bill Green’s and sat in one of Bill’s “hot seats”, along with Ernie Watts, in Bill;s last master class on July 27, 1996, almost 30 years ago. He will be missed, his music will live forever in so many different genres, and hopefully he will receive broader recognition for all that he gave us. Plas was involved with the LAJS on numerous occasions, and was honored with our Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. RIP

You know this song even if you have never heard it. "Nautilus" is one of the most sampled jazz records in hip hop history, looped into tracks by Ghostface Killah, Slick Rick, Run-DMC and dozens more. Bob James recorded it in 1974; rap producers have been mining it ever since. This is the source code.

If summer had a theme song, this is the frontrunner. Roy Ayers built it on a hazy vibraphone groove in 1976, and it has been sampled by everyone from Dr. Dre to Mary J. Blige to Pharrell. Old enough to be a classic, sampled enough that you have already heard pieces of it without knowing. Press play and feel the heat.
