Our community gathered this evening at our Chabad for Tisha B'Av evening services, joining Jews around the world in mourning the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash while praying and yearning for the ultimate Redemption with the coming of Moshiach now.

The saddest day on the Jewish calendar is Tisha B'Av, the Ninth of Av—the day on which both the First and Second Holy Temples were destroyed, marking the beginning of centuries of exile, persecution, and profound spiritual loss.

Tisha B'Av began this evening and continues until tomorrow night. During this time, we fast, refrain from many physical comforts and pleasures, and mourn the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash.

Yet, even on this darkest day, there is hope. Our Sages teach that Moshiach is born on Tisha B'Av, reminding us that from the deepest darkness can emerge the greatest light. From the ashes of destruction will come the rebuilding of the Third Beis HaMikdash and the ultimate Redemption.

As our Sages promise: "Whoever mourns for Jerusalem will merit seeing her joy."

May we merit to celebrate Tisha B'Av as a festival with the coming of Moshiach, speedily in our days. Amen!

The saddest day on the Jewish calendar is the Ninth of Av, Tisha B'Av—the date on which both our Holy Temples were destroyed, marking the beginning of exile, persecution, and spiritual darkness.

Tisha b'Av begins this Wednesday evening and continues until nightfall on Thursday evening. During this time, we fast, abstain from pleasurable activities, and lament the destruction of the Holy Temple and the exile of our people.

Yet, it is also a tradition that Tisha b'Av is the birthday of Moshiach. This symbolizes the belief that from the ashes of the destroyed Temple will rise an incomparably magnificent edifice, and that exile will ultimately give birth to redemption. Thus, Tisha b’Av is a day of both mourning and hope, for "One who mourns Jerusalem will merit seeing her happiness!"

We will host a meaningful Tisha B'Av service on Wednesday evening and Thursday evening followed by a community Havdalah and breakfast dinner.

This week's major water main break in West Hollywood caused heavy traffic, street closures, and unexpected detours throughout the city.

Our Rabbi had to shop for Shabbat at a different Trader Joe's because of the road closures. As he stepped into the elevator, he struck up a conversation with Professor Burke and asked if he was Jewish.

With a smile, Professor Burke replied, "Technically, yes. My mother's mother was Jewish."

Our rabbi smiled and said, "Now I know why I had to come here today—to Bar Mitzvah you!"

Moments later, right there in Trader Joe's, they wrapped tefillin together and celebrated his Bar Mitzvah!

What began as an inconvenient detour became a beautiful Mitzvah and a reminder that Hashem guides our steps. Sometimes the roadblocks in our lives are actually leading us exactly where we're meant to be.
