To close out the League year and prepare for the exciting year ahead, JLLA hosted its Leadership Bootcamp at Rainey House on Thursday, May 28. We were thrilled to welcome a strong turnout of first-time leaders and returning leaders who had not previously attended the program.

The bootcamp provided participants with essential tools and knowledge for successful leadership within JLLA. Topics included Leadership Tools for Success, Planning Your League Year, Leadership and Committee Norms, Communications 101, Budgets 101, Member Essentials, and Rainey House Access. The evening was filled with valuable information, meaningful discussions, and opportunities for leaders to connect and learn from one another.

It also served as a powerful reminder of the vital role our leaders play in advancing the mission of JLLA and creating impactful experiences for our members and community. We are excited to see all that these leaders and their committees will accomplish in the coming League year and look forward to the positive impact they will make throughout JLLA.

As we begin a new League year, I am honored to serve as President of the Junior League of Los Angeles and excited for all that lies ahead.

Over the past year, we celebrated an extraordinary milestone, 100 years of women leading, serving, and strengthening communities across Los Angeles. While Centennial gave us the opportunity to reflect on our history and accomplishments, it also reinforced something equally important: the future of this organization depends on our willingness to continue building.

That idea is at the heart of this year's theme, 101: Building the Foundation for the Next 100 Years.

A strong foundation is built intentionally. It requires investing in our mission, our members, and our community partnerships. It means ensuring that the League remains a place where women can make a meaningful impact in Los Angeles while developing the skills, confidence, and connections that help them grow as leaders.

This year, we have tremendous opportunities to do just that.

Through our community partnerships, members will continue engaging directly with some of Los Angeles' most pressing needs while contributing to projects that create lasting impact. From supporting foster youth through our partnership with Children's Law Center to strengthening community spaces alongside LA City Recreation and Parks, our work reflects the League at its best: hands-on, mission-driven, and focused on creating meaningful change.

At the same time, we will continue investing in the organization itself. The League's ability to serve Los Angeles has always been rooted in the commitment of members who step forward to volunteer, lead, mentor, and support one another. Every committee meeting, community project, fundraiser, training, and leadership role contributes to a stronger League and a stronger future.

As we look ahead, I hope each of us considers the role we can play in building that future. Whether you are a first year active just beginning your League journey or a longtime member whose experience continues to guide and strengthen our organization, your involvement matters. The League's next chapter will be shaped by the women who choose to invest their time, talents, and leadership today.

I am optimistic about what we can accomplish together this year. We have an opportunity not only to continue our tradition of service, but also to strengthen the foundation that will support future generations of League women and the communities we serve.

Thank you for being part of this organization and for the countless ways you contribute to its success. I look forward to serving alongside you as we build what comes next.

On the first Monday of May each year, delegates from Junior Leagues throughout California are invited to the Capitol in Sacramento to advocate for legislation important to the work of Leagues across the state. This year, 15 delegates from JLLA had the amazing and unforgettable opportunity to represent our League.

This year's Day at the Capitol began with a welcome from Centennial Year JLLA President Dawn Eash Wazzan and a special memoriam for Amy Mathias, a beloved JLLA member and S**C delegate who unexpectedly passed away earlier this year. We are incredibly grateful to the Legacy Leadership Circle and donors of the Centennial Campaign who generously funded scholarships in Amy’s honor, helping provide ten additional scholarships for JLLA members to attend DATC.

Participants also heard insightful remarks from Ellen Cessarti-Monroy, Sr. Consultant, discussing the work of the Higher Education Committee, and state Senator Angelique Ashby of Senate District 8. Assemblymember Gail Pellerin was awarded "Legislator of the Year Award". The session closed with the CalS**C providing their annual report and strategic plan for 2026-2030.

Next, our JLLA delegates met directly with legislators in the Capitol about bills they’re supporting in the State Senate and Assembly in support of CalS**C’s five supported areas including: Health, Education, Family Support, Violence Prevention and Anti-Human Trafficking.

Our 2026 CalS**C participants included Kirsten Housel and Narida Robertson Dickerson (Senior and Junior S**C delegates), JLLA Sustainer Nene Ogbechie, and rising delegate Michelle Amado, as well as 11 additional Actives and Sustainers who were awarded scholarships to attend. On Sunday prior to Day at the Capitol, our members enjoyed exploring Sacramento and socializing with members & leaders from 16 other California Junior Leagues.

If you're interested in participating in next year's Day at the Capitol on May 3, 2027, keep an eye out for information from our upcoming delegates in the new League year.
