Kibera Girl Rises Above: Poetry, Hope, and Ending Period Poverty!

One of the most moving moments at the 2025 Digital Power of Women Conference was the powerful spoken-word performance by Hope Mburi Ochieng, a girl from Kenya's Kibra slums whose story reminded us that greatness is not determined by where we begin, but by the courage to rise despite every obstacle.

Speaking from her lived experience growing up in Kibera, Hope painted a vivid picture of resilience, a place where dreams are often overlooked, yet never extinguished. Through poetry, she transformed hardship into hope, reminding us that behind every challenge lies untapped potential waiting to be seen.

Her words challenged us to look beyond what society often defines as "lack" and instead recognize the strength, creativity, and determination that exist in communities too often overlooked. She spoke of rising above poverty, period poverty, gender-based violence, and countless barriers, not with bitterness, but with purpose.

Hope's message was a powerful reminder that girls are not simply the leaders of tomorrow—they are already leading today. Through advocacy, environmental action, education, and the arts, they are shaping conversations, transforming communities, and inspiring a more just and compassionate world.

Power of Women celebrates voices like Hope's because stories have the power to change hearts, influence policy, and inspire action. When we invest in young women, we invest in leaders who transform adversity into opportunity and hope into lasting change.

Every girl deserves the opportunity not only to survive but to dream, to lead, and to thrive.

At the 2025 Digital Power of Women Conference, one of the most compelling keynote addresses was delivered by Dr. Mimi Chun Quinones, Founder of Partners for Patients NGO and Ambassador to the Pan-African Parliament.

Drawing from nearly three decades of leadership in public and global health, Dr. Quinones shared a powerful reflection on breaking barriers in global health leadership. She reminded us that while women have the expertise, innovation, and resilience to lead, the greatest challenge has often been perception—not capability.

Her address challenged leaders to embrace authenticity, ethical leadership, and scientific excellence as the foundation for transforming institutions and creating more inclusive systems.

She also brought global attention to one of the most pressing issues in healthcare today: the underrepresentation of women of African ancestry in genetics and genomics research. This persistent data gap continues to influence health outcomes in cancer, maternal health, cardiovascular disease, child development, and the future of AI-driven healthcare.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly central to health innovation, Dr. Quinones urges global leaders to ensure that women of African ancestry are fully represented in the data that shapes tomorrow's medical discoveries. Equity in data is equity in healthcare.

Her closing vision resonated throughout the conference: a future where women of African ancestry are not simply participants in health systems, but architects of them—leading research, influencing policy, driving innovation, and shaping a more equitable future for global health.

The Digital Power of Women Conference continues to amplify bold voices and transformative ideas that are redefining leadership, advancing innovation, and ensuring that women are at the forefront of shaping the future.

At Power of Girls, we believe that investing in girls is one of the most powerful investments any society can make. When girls are equipped with knowledge, practical skills, confidence, and opportunities, they do more than transform their own lives, they become catalysts for stronger families, healthier communities, and more resilient nations.

Our mission extends beyond 'empowerment' as a concept. It is about creating environments where girls discover their potential, develop leadership, acquire practical and employable skills, embrace innovation, champion environmental sustainability, and actively participate in solving the challenges facing their communities.

We envision a generation of young women who are not waiting for opportunities but are creating them. A generation that understands leadership is rooted in service, innovation, compassion, and responsibility. Whether through mentorship, entrepreneurship, digital skills, environmental action, health education, or community engagement, every initiative within the Power of Girls Clubs is designed to prepare girls to lead with confidence and purpose.

Around the world, girls continue to face barriers that limit their opportunities. Yet, every time a girl gets access to education, mentorship, and practical experience, those barriers begin to fall, not only for her, but for generations that follow.

Reimagining Healthcare Systems for a Connected World: The Leadership Vision of Dr. Sangita Reddy

In a world where health systems are being tested by population growth, emerging diseases, and unequal access to care, leadership in healthcare is increasingly defined by the ability to combine innovation with inclusion. Dr. Sangita Reddy stands at the center of this transformation, shaping how large-scale healthcare delivery can remain both advanced and accessible.

Dr. Sangita Reddy is a global healthcare leader and Joint Managing Director of Apollo Hospitals, one of Asia’s largest integrated healthcare groups. Her leadership is closely associated with expanding access to quality healthcare, strengthening hospital systems, and advancing technology-driven medical solutions across diverse populations.

Her work is deeply rooted in healthcare system development, where she focuses on improving efficiency, expanding reach, and ensuring that quality medical services are not limited to urban centers alone. Through her leadership at Apollo Hospitals, she has contributed to the growth of one of the most recognized private healthcare networks in the world.

A key dimension of her influence is her engagement in global health and policy platforms, where she has contributed to discussions on healthcare innovation, digital health transformation, and sustainable health systems. Her leadership reflects a consistent focus on integrating technology into healthcare delivery to improve outcomes and accessibility.

Dr. Reddy has also played an active role in advancing collaborative global initiatives, including her involvement in major economic and policy forums such as the G20 engagement platforms. In these spaces, she has advocated for stronger healthcare infrastructure, public-private collaboration, and investment in resilient health systems.

Her leadership approach is defined by systems thinking—viewing healthcare not only as treatment, but as an interconnected ecosystem involving prevention, access, affordability, and innovation. This perspective has positioned her as a key voice in conversations about the future of healthcare delivery.

Beyond institutional leadership, she has been a strong advocate for digital health solutions, telemedicine, and data-driven healthcare models that expand access to underserved communities. Her work highlights the growing role of technology in bridging gaps in healthcare equity.

Dr. Sangita Reddy continues to influence global healthcare conversations at a time when health systems are being redefined by innovation and demand. Her leadership reflects a future-oriented vision—one where healthcare is not only reactive, but predictive, inclusive, and universally accessible.

Transforming Plastic Waste into Sustainable Infrastructure: How Girls in Uganda Are Leading Environmental Innovation

The most impactful solutions to global challenges often begin at the community level. In Uganda, Power of Girls Clubs are demonstrating how youth leadership, environmental stewardship, and social innovation can come together to create lasting change.

Through an innovative eco-construction initiative, girls are using discarded plastic bottles, compacting them with soil to create durable eco-bricks, and using these materials to construct public sanitation facilities. What was once considered waste is being transformed into essential community infrastructure that improves public health while protecting the environment.

This initiative represents far more than the construction of toilets. It is a practical demonstration of the principles of the circular economy, where waste materials are repurposed into valuable community assets. At the same time, it equips girls with practical skills, strengthens their leadership capacity, and inspires them to become active contributors to sustainable development within their communities.

By integrating environmental conservation with community service, the initiative challenges conventional perceptions of girls' roles in community development. These young leaders are not merely participating in environmental action—they are designing solutions, mobilizing their communities, and demonstrating that girls possess the innovation, resilience, and determination required to tackle complex societal challenges.

At Power of Girls, we believe that equipping girls with practical skills and opportunities to lead creates ripple effects that extend far beyond individual communities. When girls are equipped to innovate, they become architects of sustainable development and catalysts for transformative change.
