Food work is getting hotter and hotter. In New York, there are NO specific protections to keep workers like Karen safe from .

"It is hot not just for the weather, but because of the stoves," says Karen, an NYC restaurant worker and member of Laundry Workers Center. This year, she and her coworkers took a stand with management, which secured them some improvements to the failing air conditioning. But that is far from enough!

Workers like Karen need legal protections to back them up. Specific heat standards that include:

🌡️temperature thresholds to trigger breaks, shutdowns, and cooling methods

🧑🏽‍🏫 training for employers and workers

💵 hazard pay & compensation for lost wages

A new report on the temporary agricultural worker program is based on interviews with farmworkers across Washington State, including many Familias Unidas por la Justicia members.

This matters NOW because Congress has been trying to expand H-2A for years, most recently with the Securing Agriculture's Workforce Act (SAWA).

As this report shows, H-2A is bad for all workers. It not only exploits vulnerable guest workers, but harms the local immigrant workers who have propped up this multi-billion dollar industry for decades.

Worker Justice Center of New York's legal team got two clients released from detention and reunited with families last week! This fight is big and overwhelming but we are so grateful for EVERYONE showing up to defend our communities. ✊💕

After waiting for the judge's decision these past few weeks, we received the incredible news that BOTH of our clients, whom we represented in the U.S. District Court, will be released from detention and reunited with their families!!!

At the Justicia for Migrant Workers action outside Ontario's Ministry of Labour last month, migrant workers with Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Progr (similar to H-2A in the US) spoke about .

While all workers in Ontatio lack specific , migrant workers are at a greater risk because of the extreme working and living conditions they must endure.

Today we honor Farmworker Honesto Silva Ibarra who died nine years ago, a young father who collapsed after prolonged exposure to heat and wildfire smoke while working on a farm in Sumas Washington. Honesto was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center where he died on August 6th, 2017. We mark this day with love and respect for Honesto and all of the workers who have needlessly given their lives for lack of safety and basic human rights.

Honesto was in the US using an H-2A agricultural visa, and we continue to challenge the existence and expansion of this program. We dream of a future where no further deaths come from the exploitative practices built into the fabric of industrial farms and this visa program.

The H-2A program cannot be changed by filing legal cases against a few growers. Calling for reforms and better enforcement is ineffective. The abuse is built into the program. It is systemic, not just a minor problem that can be fixed. Migrant workers coming to work shouldn't be held captive, in isolated barracks behind fences, but should be part of the farmworker communities already here.

We need not just to end the H-2A temporary worker program, but to force Congress to allow people who come to the U.S. to work as farmworkers to receive permanent residence visas, without being chained to growers or other corporations.
