A group of House Democrats has moved forward with a formal push to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, driven largely by criticism of federal immigration enforcement following the fatal February shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. Illinois Rep. Robin Kelly introduced articles of impeachment against Noem, accusing her of obstruction of Congress, violation of the public trust, and self-dealing related to actions taken under her leadership at the Department of Homeland Security.
According to reports, more than 50 House Democrats have co-signed or indicated support for the impeachment effort — a significant bloc given the party’s minority status in the chamber — and the articles include charges that Noem’s enforcement operations have infringed on civil rights and circumvented congressional oversight.
Critics of the impeachment push say it is unlikely to succeed in a Republican-controlled House, and the Department of Homeland Security has dismissed the effort as political “showmanship.” Nonetheless, supporters like Rep. Gabe Vasquez argue that Noem’s policies have directed ICE and other agents to “terrorize our communities” and therefore she must be held accountable.
The impeachment move has been reported amid broader nationwide debates over immigration enforcement tactics and demands for transparency and accountability in the wake of high-profile ICE operations and protests.
