"...schools witness the everyday impact that housing instability has on children and families. We see its effects on attendance, learning, mental health, and family well-being. We also see the incredible strength and commitment that parents make every day to create as stable of an environment as possible for their children, despite the innumerable challenges they are faced with daily."

Decades of research show that 90–95% of people in supportive housing remain stably housed long-term, far outperforming other approaches.

Why? Because supportive housing provides:

✔️ Stable housing first
✔️Person-centered services
✔️ Long-term support for stability for all, including families and children

In areas where the majority of PLN families live, the median household income is $44,823 and 31.4% of households rely on SNAP. These families are not one paycheck away from instability; many are already living in it. Supportive housing helps families move past instability and improves far more than where they live.

This August, we’re Urging policymakers to hear the real stories firsthand during Supportive Housing Week (Aug 24–28).

Earlier this month, PLN's Family Services teams came together to host an Open House at our Hill St. Peace & Healing Center. Families participated in two workshops: a hands-on gardening activity that introduced grounding techniques to support emotional well-being and a presentation sharing practical strategies for recognizing and managing anxiety. To support families as they prepared for the new school year, each child received a backpack filled with school supplies, and six families were selected through a raffle to receive $100 Ross gift cards.

Shoutout to participating programs: Partnership for Families, United Mental Health Promoters, Domestic Violence Support Services, and Family Preservation👏👏👏

It’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Week of Action, a time to highlight the importance of SNAP and food accessibility and push our lawmakers to protect food assistance, reverse proposed SNAP cuts, and stop shifting program costs onto state governments.

Please join us in urging Congress to invest in SNAP because every eligible person who loses SNAP benefits is one more family facing unnecessary barriers to food. To take action today and send a direct email to your Senator urging them to pass legislation that supports families, visit: https://bit.ly/4xVZ4Ad.

On Wednesday August 12th, U.S. Representative Laura Friendman visited Para Los Niños’ Early Education Center in Hollywood to learn more about staff and parent concerns around proposed federal changes to the Head Start program. In addition to spending some quality time with our little ones, she also had the opportunity to see first-hand how upholding evidence-based standards for our program results in educational success for the children who need it most, with 98% of our Head Start students meeting developmental milestones despite 40% of our families experiencing housing instability in FY2026.

At Para Los Niños, Head Start isn't just high-quality early learning; it's a lifeline for Los Angeles' working parents.

PLN's August Newsletter is here! We took a break last month because PLN shuts down for a week every summer to allow staff members, who give their all every day, the opportunity to focus on rest, renewal, and the people and activities that bring us joy. We hope you allowed yourself some time to take care of yourself this summer, too.

August is all about new chapters, celebrating endings, fresh starts, and exciting opportunities ahead.

As we embrace fresh starts this August, don’t forget: our Back-to-School campaign is in full swing! Join us to help our students kick off the new year with the resources they need to thrive. Every donation makes a difference. Visit paralosninos.org/backtoschool to support their success!
