To experience restorative justice in practice is a special thing. On Tuesday, Prism Way came with me to CIW to speak to our students about reentry, board prep and careers. When the program at CIW began, I used to leave alone and go directly to CIM to meet with Fred Griffin and Tyson Atlas for a WordsUncaged class across the street. I remember similar moments leaving Lancaster at sunset with Allen, Edwin, Jack, Kunlyna and Frank. To have them all with me this time— passing on their knowledge, care and experiences to a new generation of PGI students at CIW was a moment I will always cherish. We are so much stronger together. Don’t let people tell you we can’t change the system. This is what transformation look like.— Dr. Bidhan Roy

Expanding access to education beyond the classroom.

Cal State LA’s PGI has extended its bachelors degree program to the new center in San Quentin Rehabilitation Center.

The initiative will provide incarcerated students with access to hire education and support opportunities for personal development and successful reentry.

Thank you who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

PGI students at Lancaster are helping raise funds this Christmas for CASA—a wonderful organization that supports foster children in LA. Our students are holding sales on the yard and donating crocheted items to support these kids in need. Please consider scanning the QR code and supporting their efforts.

“Obtaining this bachelor’s degree from Cal State LA has changed my life. I now have avenues in which I may walk to be of service to others. I obtained all of my education in prison and am a first-generation college graduate. It is my hope to show my son, family, juveniles, and others, that where you are (prison) does not dictate the trajectory of one’s life. I know that one person is able to make a difference for the common good of society; the ripple effect. Through education, I am now able to make that
positive difference and be a light. I am ever so grateful.”

“Graduating with a bachelors’ degree means the world to me, especially as someone serving life without parole. The
opportunity to expand my mind and analyze narratives has given me a freedom that my physical body may
never get. I feel incredibly humbled by the painful fact that because of me, Tori and Lily will never be able to go to college. I do these things in honor of them. I’ve transformed myself into the person they deserved me to be. Should something change, and my release
become a reality, I am fully equipped to have a great career in numerous avenues due to this degree. I am also a proficient critical thinker after mastering liberal
studies, which would make me a conscientious voter and citizen. Most importantly, my lifestyle is just so much
different now from prior to my crime. Now I can hold a job for many years and complete other long-term goals such as this education milestone; not to mention I have been clean and sober since 2013. Rather than leaving destruction in my wake, today I leave people places and
things better than I found them and this is a large part of that change. Thank you so much for supporting this program.”
