Solidarity Research Center

Solidarity Research Center We build solidarity economy ecosystems using data science, story-based strategy, & action research. We endorse the Global Tapestry of Alternatives.

We are a worker self-directed nonprofit that develops solidarity economy ecosystems using data science, story-based strategy, and action research. We work at the intersection of racial justice and solidarity economies. We were founded in 2014, initially as the research arm of the Industrial Workers of the World. We supported worker-led organizing campaigns, such as the incarcerated workers, with s

trategic research. We then broadened our scope to partner with grassroots groups outside of the union, such as farmworkers, and to take on applied research consulting work with organizations, such as the Food Chain Workers Alliance. We became very interested in what we were for, not just what we were against. And, how we can create the conditions within our organization to carry out fulfilling work. We established an affiliated worker-owned cooperative, Solidarity Research Cooperative, in 2015. That cooperative was dissolved in 2017, and some of the members went on to create a new entity, Research Action. Today, we are committed to resisting and building, opposing and proposing, and to building a new world in the shell of the old. In addition to our social movement building work, we partner with community organizations, cooperatives, worker centers, and labor unions to provide quantitative and qualitative research. We invite you to contact us if you are interested in partnering with us. We are proud members of the New Economy Coalition, Symbiosis, US Federation of Worker Cooperatives, and the US Solidarity Economy Network.

🎂 Celebrating 10 Years of Solidarity Research

A decade ago, we set out to create research and education that serves movements, not institutions. As we celebrate this milestone, we're reflecting on what we built together in 2025:

📚 A full year of Municipalism Learning Series programming—connecting organizers and thinkers exploring democratic alternatives

📊 Groundbreaking regional economic analysis with Cooperacion Santa Ana, mapping paths toward a regenerative economy in Orange County

💙 Our new Care Economy Circle, reimagining social reproduction beyond capitalism
This work happens because of communities building alternatives right now—and your support makes it possible.

We're raising $10,000 by year's end to launch our second Municipalism Cohort Fellowship, expand research partnerships, and deepen our political education work.

Can you help us start our second decade strong?

We are excited to announce a new podcast series, Kilombo, which will explore the theory and practice of liberated zones in the 21st century. These are spaces and places where communities seek to exercise control over their political and economic destiny while being situated within larger hostile economies and state institutions. The series will be hosted by Thandisizwe Chimurenga.

As Trump returns to the White House, what can we do to prepare our communities for the threats and uncertainties ahead? How do we protect our people today, while building collective power and resilience towards a liberated tomorrow? In this first session of SRC’s 2025 Municipalism Learning Series, we’ll explore these pressing questions through a conversation between organizers working on the frontlines of today’s social movements. While drawing on their own diverse experiences, perspectives and lessons, our panelists are united by a shared conviction that the safest community is an organized community on the path to self-governance.
