🏮Broadway Night Lights🏮Save the Date: October 12th! This beloved Downtown L.A. carnival is coming back after a six-year break Broadway Night Lights will bring back the Night on Broadway vibes this October.

The Night on Broadway saga continues: After a six-year hiatus, the beloved Downtown L.A. festival has finally announced its official comeback—albeit under a new name and city council member. Now dubbed Broadway Night Lights, the celebration will take place on October 12 between 3rd and 8th Streets.

So far, the event touts two stages of live music plus circus performances, wrestling matches, a classic car show, a Ferris wheel, kids activities, art installations and food vendors. The Los Angeles Theatre, Palace Theatre and Million Dollar Theatre will open their doors for free (3pm–midnight) to host performances and offer tours.

The revived event will now be spearheaded by council member Kevin de León, who represents DTLA and parts of the Eastside and Northeast L.A. “I am thrilled to bring back Broadway Night Lights, a festival that truly captures the heart and soul of Downtown Los Angeles,” the politician said in an official statement. “This event celebrates our community’s rich cultural diversity and unites us through dynamic arts and entertainment.”

The return has been a long time coming: Part of a larger Bringing Back Broadway initiative to revitalize the city’s old theater district, the original Night on Broadway debuted in 2014 and ran annually through 2018. But the 2019 edition was canceled when the council member who was then behind the effort, José Huizar, was raided by the FBI; he was soon after charged with racketeering conspiracy and tax evasion and sentenced to 13 years in federal prison. So the 2019 edition was postponed to 2020—but then basically the whole world was postponed in 2020—and the event never really materialized again, until now.

There’s no word yet on the festival’s exact timing or a few other organizational details, but we’ll share them as soon as they’re made public. Can you sense how excited we are about this all?

Downtown’s Legendary Clifton’s Is Back…Again. A new iteration of the nearly century-old institution will debut over the next month.

Downtown’s legendary Clifton’s is back… again. The “Pacific Seas” portion of the storied venue, which started life as a cafeteria nearly 100 years ago, was open this weekend with tropical cocktails and complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Reservations are currently open for Fridays and Saturdays only. The rest of the five-story venue, which owner Andrew Meieran spent years rebuilding and reimagining, is scheduled to open by October 1.

Meieran purchased the building from the family of founder Clifford Clinton in 2011 and transformed it from a fantastical forest-themed cafeteria founded during the Great Depression into a labyrinth of lavishly decorated drinking parlors.

The fourth-floor tiki bar is the first room to come back online after a plumbing disaster caused the ceilings on three floors to collapse and destroyed a kitchen. The venue has been open sporadically and for special events since closing in 2018 and again in 2020 during COVID. Meieran sold the building in 2022 and now reportedly operates under a long-term lease.

The main entrance is covered with closed signs, but visitors will encounter a stone-faced guard at an unmarked door at the south end of the building and are directed to climb four flights of stairs through empty black rooms before reaching the tropical paradise of Pacific Seas.

Management reassured visitors that food will return to some of the beautifully designed spaces, but that there are no plans for a cafeteria of any kind. Several chefs have experimented with upscale dining options which have all been short-lived. The next iteration may include an experience where waitresses in vintage Pan Am stewardess uniforms serve meals from airline carts. The new Clifton’s, branded Clifton’s Republic, continues its journey as a high concept, boozy theme park for the new Downtown.
