Happy Alice Piper Day! 🌟

Today, June 2nd, we honor the incredible 15-year-old Paiute girl who fought for equal access to education. Her landmark 1924 California Supreme Court victory ended school segregation for Native students across the state, three decades before Brown v. Board of Education.

Here is how you can dive into her legacy today:

Let’s Celebrate Alice Piper!

June 2nd is officially Alice Piper Day across California! While we honor the statewide recognition of this young civil rights hero, we are excited to keep the celebration going in her home region.

Following recent community dedication events, such as the one at Big Pine High School, we are thrilled to announce a special book launch and signing for "Alice Piper Speaks Up." This beautiful new book, a part of the Fighting for Justice series, captures the incredible true story of a young Paiute girl whose legal battle helped end school segregation for Native American students in California.

We invite everyone in the Owens Valley and surrounding areas to join us and one of our key community partners, author Sage Andrew Romero, for this momentous premiere.

Every single election is a turning point, and our communities cannot afford to sit on the sidelines. For Indian Country, voting isn’t just a civic duty; it is a powerful declaration of our resilience and our future.
When we show up at the polls, we bring the voices of those unheard with us.

Make Your Voting Plan Today. Don't wait until Election Day. Take five minutes right now to secure your voice: Make sure you register, vote by mail, or know where to vote.

Bring a relative: Let’s look out for our elders and youth. Help a family member register or give them a ride to the polls.

Empowering Our Families, Strengthening Our Future. ✊🏽

We believe that every American Indian and Alaska Native family deserves a path to stability and health. We don’t just advocate from the sidelines; we work on the ground to provide the essential tools our community needs to thrive.

From addressing the needs of Native workers to raising awareness of Alice Piper, and providing others with capacity training, we are here to:

--->Convene: Bringing our people together to share wisdom and resources.

--->Organize: Building systems that work for us, led by us.

--->Advocate: Serving as a voice for those who have been made to feel voiceless.

We are 100% Native-led and committed to breaking cycles of poverty and trauma. To our supporters and partners: thank you for standing with us. To our community: your pride is our strength. Share the image with others!

Do you know the story of Alice Piper? 🎓✨

In 1924, 15-year-old Alice Piper (Paiute) took a courageous stand for her education in Big Pine, California. Her journey paved the way for students across the state, creating a lasting legacy for educational access and equality long before many other historical milestones.

We are proud to celebrate June 2nd as Alice Piper Day. Our mission is to ensure her incredible story continues to inspire future generations and raise awareness about her contribution to California’s educational history.

The Native Development Network is still smiling. There is nothing quite like the energy of the community coming together as we did in a visit to a powwow in Arcadia.

To everyone who stopped by to say hello: Thank you. Whether we were catching up with old friends we haven't seen in far too long or meeting new faces for the first time, every connection reminded us why we do what we do. We were especially honored to spend time with:

-->Our Elders: Thank you for your presence and the grounding wisdom you bring to every gathering.

-->The Families: It was a joy to see the next generation out in full force!

-->The Storytellers: We heard some truly "good stories" this weekend—the kind that stay with you long after the tents are packed away.

Reconnecting and visiting is the heartbeat of our work. Thank you for sharing your time and your journeys with us.

Until the next one, we'll see you! 🪶✨
