🚨CALL TO ACTION: Horse Mounted Patrol.
Hello DTLA friends, neighbors, and leaders:
The Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council - DLANC is meeting on October 8th at 6:30 PM at City Hall East (entrance via City Hall on Main Street) to discuss a letter to the Office of the Chief of Police/Police Commission requesting additional mounted platoon officers to be deployed in DTLA.
This is in response to the rising crime rates, retail theft, and staffing shortages that hinder the LAPD Central Division’s ability to maintain foot-beat patrols and respond to 911 calls promptly. Mounted officers can enhance community engagement and alleviate pressure on existing officers without additional costs to the city, helping create a safer environment for our local businesses and vulnerable communities that are feeling the effects of crime and organized retail theft.
So, what can you do?
• Come to the meeting on October 8th and tell the DLANC to vote YES to support more mounted officers.
• Spread the word to neighbors, friends, and your networks about the meeting and the importance of a safer DTLA.
• If you can't attend, email your support of this letter to the board at [email protected]
It's important to note that the current climate of the DLANC board tends to be pessimistic of the LAPD. This creates challenges for DTLA stakeholders to have a unified voice to advocate for the resources that DTLA needs and deserves. As our closest form of local government, it’s important for DLANC to hear from our community about our desire for safer streets. By focusing on constructive dialogue rather than ideological disagreements, we can better support the needs of our neighborhood as a unified front.
Let's show the LAPD and DLANC that we care about our community and that we're united in our efforts to make DTLA a safer place for everyone.
Best,
Shawn Smith
DTLA Stakeholder since 1990

Subject: Support for DLANC Letter Regarding Mounted Patrol Resources in DTLA
Dear DLANC Board Members,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my support for the DLANC’s letter endorsing the LAPD Central Division’s request for additional mounted patrol officers to be deployed in Downtown Los Angeles.
Our community is feeling the pressures of rising crime rates, retail theft, and staffing shortages that challenge the LAPD’s ability to maintain consistent foot-beat patrols and respond promptly to 911 calls. Adding mounted officers would not only help alleviate the strain on existing resources but also enhance community engagement, contributing to a safer environment for our local businesses and the vulnerable communities they serve.
It’s important for the DLANC to hear from residents and stakeholders who are united in advocating for safer streets in DTLA. By fostering constructive dialogue and collaboration, we can better address the needs of our neighborhood.
I kindly urge you to support the letter endorsing the LAPD’s request for mounted patrol resources at the upcoming meeting on October 8th. Together, we can make a meaningful impact in ensuring a safer DTLA for everyone.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Warm regards,
