ESY LFP Artist Highlight💫 Meet Bellita Gomez, 18. Take a look into works Bellita worked on this semester.

1: Embodied Resistance
“There is a lot going on in our country right now, and more than ever, we need community. We must continue to speak out against the corrupt administration that continues to alienate and separate families. This is not normal, and none of what is happening should be normalized. We need to wakeup and continue to stay informed, as well as educate those around us, because together we are stronger. ICE OUT.”

2: From LA to The Bay
“My trip to San Fransisco last April is definitely one of my favorite memories. It had always been my dream to travel, and although the trip was still inside California, it felt entirely different from Los Angeles. The slang , the culture, and the people all made it feel like a new world to me. During this trip, I had the privilege of experiencing a new landscape, and something one of the mentors in my class shared really stayed with me, that landscapes can be political. It made me question.. who has access to these views? Who can afford to travel, and who cannot? This was an idea I had never really thought about before, and realizing how it affects me and people around me opened my eyes and changed the way I see these scenic views. Im forever grateful to have been able to experience such a beautiful city.”

1 & 2: Scouting for Horses
“Accompanying my dad to scout for horses for my dad’s new and upcoming documentary series based off the last bandit in California that was hung. Besides scouting for horses, I was able to groom the horse and learn how to ride a horse on my own.”

3 & 4: Kelsey’s Birthday
“Celebrating Kelsey’s 17th birthday at San Diego State Beach with my two best friends. Coming together and spending quality time on this special day, I wanted to capture our memories so we can always look back on this special day we spent together.”

The first look into this semesters ESY class! 💫💫💫 Everything we experience, our heritage, the city we live in, and the work we pursue, is carried with us and expressed in how we show up in the world. Through photography, our artists reflect on the personal and collective forces that shape their identities. Here’s a look into ESY artist Ashley’s work...

“Throughout these images, I explore the beauty and charm of the communities within Los Angeles, not the ‘famous’ parts of the city, but rather the more ‘run-down’ areas that are often neglected, ignored, or even marginalized. As a teenager in the city, I often find myself exploring communities outside of mine, and due to this I discovered an abandoned summer camp’s pool. Although, to many it’s an old pool full of frogs and graffiti, to me it represents the raw state of Los Angeles. A city full of artwork that gives our community charm, beauty, and its uniqueness. I also specifically explore South LA, where it is common to dump items in neighborhoods or anywhere physically possible. Within these images, I use this issue of dumping in my photos to create something more out of things people dump, as they are much more than just ‘trash’.”
