When Gaby enrolled her five-year-old son Matthew in Dodgers Dreamteam, she hoped baseball would give him a new way to connect with others.
Matthew, who is on the autism spectrum, initially found the unfamiliar environment challenging. But each time he returned, he found teammates who welcomed him, encouraged him and invited him to play.
Eight seasons later, the experience has shaped their entire family.
Matthew developed friendships and confidence that extended beyond the field. Gaby grew from a volunteer coach supporting her son into a Dodgers Dreamteam Field Champion helping children throughout Hawthorne find their own place to belong.

Welcome to our first Scholar Saturday! We’ll be highlighting the inspiring students whose futures are being shaped through our Legacy Scholarships.

We’re kicking off the series with Janessa, a first-generation college student heading to Cal State Fullerton this fall! Janessa has been part of Dodgers Dreamteam since she was four years old, following in the footsteps of her older siblings. Now, after more than a decade in the program, she’s beginning a new chapter as a Legacy Scholar.

For Janessa, this scholarship represents a meaningful step toward easing the financial pressures of college and allowing her to focus more fully on her education.

“Coming from a low income family, having a scholarship will give them a little bit of financial relief. It means a lot that my family wouldn’t have that burden and it’ll be a little bit of help for them.”

Raised with the belief that giving back is important, Janessa hopes to use her education to make a difference in the community that helped shape her. Her goal is to return to her neighborhood, volunteer, and mentor younger students who need a role model—continuing the cycle of support that this scholarship has provided for her.

Congratulations, Janessa! We’re excited to follow your journey and can’t wait to see the impact you’ll make at Cal State Fullerton and beyond.

Congratulations to the 2026 Legacy Scholars! Will Smith and Stephen Nelson joined us in celebrating 10 first-generation college students, each receiving a $10,000 scholarship and laptop to support their college journey. Since the 2022 All-Star Game, the program has supported 50 scholars.

“When I first joined, I was definitely very shy and kept to myself.”
Eight years ago, Sofia stepped onto a Dodgers Dreamteam field for her first experience in organized sports. She found teammates who made her feel like she belonged, coaches who encouraged her to lead and a community that believed in her dreams.
The confidence she developed on the field followed her into high school, where she became captain of her softball team and vice president of her school’s Associated Student Body.
Now, Sofia is taking her next step as an LADF Legacy Scholar. She will attend California State University, Long Beach, to study kinesiology and pursue a career as a physical therapist or athletic trainer.
“Because of Dodgers Dreamteam, I now have a community that supports me and encourages me to accomplish my dreams.”

Long before Victor Sanchez-Hernandez became a staff member at Seoul International Park, he was a shy five-year-old living in the apartment building next door.
His earliest memory of the park is stopping for a free summer lunch with his mother. Victor hesitated when he saw the other children, but she encouraged him to step forward and try something new.
“That’s where my whole adventure at the park started.”
The park—and the Dodgers Dreamfield at its center—became an extension of home. It was where Victor made friends, discovered new possibilities and found a place where he could simply be a kid.
“You have a place where you can go and be yourself and just play,” he said. “Forget about everything else you’ve got going on. Just go play.”
As Victor grew older, he kept showing up. Adults at the park gave him meaningful ways to contribute and helped him recognize his potential.
Now, Victor is one of those caring adults.
At the same park where he grew up, he helps create the experiences that once shaped him—welcoming children, making room for them and encouraging them to imagine what they can build for their own futures.
“You’re not what’s around you. You’re what you’re able to create for yourself.”
Victor’s journey is a powerful reminder that the impact of a Dodgers Dreamfield lives far beyond the field. It lives in the relationships formed, the mentors discovered and the young people who grow up knowing they have a place in their community.

Reading, baseball and community came together at the Ramona Gardens Dodgers Dreamfield. 📚💙 Dodgers Alumni Dennis Powell joined Dodgers Dreamteam participants and local youth for a special LA Reads Storytime, and every child went home with a new book to keep.

For Giovanni Garcia, coaching Dodgers Dreamteam in the City of La Puente is about much more than teaching young athletes how to hit, field and run the bases. It is about creating an environment where every child feels supported, connected, and part of a team.
