To LGBTQ Americans who serve — bravely, proudly — and to those who have stood shoulder to shoulder with our community in courtrooms to demand justice and equality, THANK YOU. Their stories are forever inspiring and deserve our attention, especially today.

Technical Sergeant Leonard P. Matlovich was a Vietnam War veteran, a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, and the first gay service member to purposely out himself to the military. His photograph appeared on the cover of the September 8, 1975, issue of Time magazine, making him a symbol of pride for thousands of gay and le***an service members. He was the first named openly gay person to appear on the cover of a U.S. news magazine.

His tombstone — a memorial to all gay veterans — does not bear his name. It reads, “When I was in the military, they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one.”

Listen at the link in our bio.

The Trevor Project has reported a major spike in crisis calls in the immediate aftermath of the US election.

From the early hours of Wednesday morning, when the election was called in favour of Donald Trump, the non-profit experienced a major spike in crisis calls from q***r and trans youth – with many citing “election anxiety”.

As a result, q***r and trans youth are now encountering long wait times as they try to access these services during a particularly overwhelming and difficult time for the community.

The Trevor Project offers crisis services to LGBTQIA+ folks aged 13 to 24 via phone, online chat or text – with calls normally focussed on providing mental health support to q***r and trans youth navigating relationships, gender identity and coming out.

Exit polls from the US election show that 86% of LGBTQIA+ people voted for Kamala Harris.

Join on a walking tour of 20th century LGBTQ landmarks in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, for a time travel trip along The Run, the circuit of q***r friendly spaces that provided community, culture and connection at a time when homosexuality was still criminalized, and in the early years of gay liberation. Drawing on original archival research and featuring unpublished images, this tour will bring a lost world to life. Book Tour and Info:

Starting from Grand Central Market, we’ll take you where the action was, from Pershing Square to the Main Street fun zone, private assignations to bold political organizing, groundbreaking legal cases to discrete bars, and even into the shuttered 1920s-era speakeasy beneath the King Eddy Saloon to see scrawled hook up messages in the only cruisy bathroom that’s a designated National Register landmark! Plus, we’ll put the nail in the coffin of the urban legend that there was a gay uprising at Cooper’s Do-Nuts that predates the Stonewall Rebellion.

“The Run” was fondly known as a circuit of q***r-friendly spaces (including bars and bookstores) traversing DTLA from Pershing Square to Main St. during a time when homosexuality was still criminalized (1940s-1960s). The community thrived and found solace within this vibrant enclave.
