Big news for AAPI communities in California. Governor Gavin Newsom has signed the 2021-22 Budget, which includes a $156+ million investment in AAPI communities, intended to address the surge of pandemic-related hate as well as the racial inequities levied against Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. This historic budget represents one of the most powerful responses to anti-AAPI hate in state history. So, where will funds be spent?

$110M will go to community organizations who are providing vital victim services and prevention;

$10M will support efforts to track, respond, and prevent to incidents of racial bias and harm;

$10M will go to anti-bias block grant to provide funding to schools to create restorative justice programs to address hate early on;

$10M will go to ethnic media outlets to reach AAPI and other underserved communities in California;

$5M will support a peer social media network project to address bullying and mental health for children and youth;

and $1.5M will go towards a workgroup to address education attainment for low income first generation AAPI college students.

There is more work to be done. Still, we hope the API Equity Budget becomes a progressive model for lawmakers here and everywhere to use in responding to hate in all of its forms.
