One of the most inspiring moments at this year’s SCASM 2025 Annual Meeting came from a voice you might not expect — Lucas Young, a young author who’s already making big waves in the world of microbiology education.
Lucas shared the story behind his new children’s book, A Hodgepodge of Microbes: A Journey into the Marvelous World of Microorganisms, which he wrote after realizing there weren’t many books that made microbiology fun and accessible for kids.
The result is a vibrant, imaginative guide that takes young readers on a colorful tour through the microscopic world. From the bacteria that make yogurt and cheese to the microbes that help clean up oil spills and protect our bodies, Lucas introduces science with creativity and warmth.
🎨 Beyond its approachable writing, A Hodgepodge of Microbes shines with colorful illustrations that bring tiny organisms to life!

🌟 Celebrating the Janet Hindler New Technologist Prodessional Grant! 🌟
The Janet Hindler New Technologist Grant opens an incredible opportunity for early-career Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLSs) to attend the full SCASM Annual Meeting — and to connect directly with leaders who are shaping the future of our field.
Through this grant, participants were paired with experienced mentors who guided them through professional development pathways, introduced them to key professional organizations, and shared invaluable insights into diverse career trajectories within clinical laboratory science.
This year’s mentors represented a wide range of expertise — from lab operations leadership and technical directorship, and even a CLS program director in academia.
Participants had the unique privilege of engaging in meaningful discussions with all the mentors — and with the legendary Janet Hindler herself, whose career and mentorship continue to inspire excellence and collaboration across the clinical laboratory community.
👏 A heartfelt thank you to Janet Hindler and all the mentors who dedicated their time and experience to supporting the next generation of CLS professionals. The impact of this program will continue to ripple through the careers of its participants for years to come.

🌟 Friday Scientific Sessions – SCASM 2025
📍 “Haves and Have-Nots in U.S. Clinical Lab Testing”
🧪 Featuring speakers:
Elizabeth Marlowe, PhD (Quest Diagnostics)
Deisy Contreras, PhD (Cedars‑Sinai Medical Center)
Susan Butler‑Wu, PhD (LAGMC)
🧑‍⚖️ Moderated by Jennifer Dien‑Bard, PhD (Children’s Hospital Los Angeles)

This compelling session dived into the disparities, challenges, and opportunities across U.S. clinical laboratory testing—exploring who has access, who doesn’t, and why that matters for patient care, diagnostics innovation, and public health equity, how we faced public health emergencies and weather or not we are prepared for what’s coming next. With perspectives from major diagnostic labs, academic medical centers, and lab leadership, the discussion shed light on resource gaps, technological divides, regulatory hurdles, and the ripple effects across the healthcare system.

🧬 “Infectious Nightmares: H5N1, Measles, and Mpox”
Speaker: Anthony Tran, PhPH (CDPH)
At SCASM 2025 annual meeting, Anthony Tran delivered a gripping talk titled “Infectious Nightmares: H5N1, Measles, and Mpox.”
With clarity and urgency, he walked us through three infectious threats that feel straight out of a thriller—but are all too real. From the evolving H5N1 avian influenza situation, to the resurgence of measles fueled by declining vaccination rates, to the continued challenges of Mpox outbreaks—his message was clear: these aren’t distant concerns; they’re here, now, and demand vigilance.
It was an eye-opening reminder that public health preparedness, communication, and collaboration are more important than ever.
Because sometimes, the scariest stories are the true ones

SCASM Annual Meeting 2025: Spotlight on Case-Based Microbiology Insights

This year’s Southern California Branch of the American Society for Microbiology (SCASM) Annual Meeting featured a captivating case studies presented during the clinical microbiology symposium.
The session, moderated by Dr. Utsav Pandey, PhD, Kaiser Permanente, the SCASM President elect, brought together three exceptional speakers who explored complex, real-world infectious disease cases that challenged even the most seasoned clinical laboratories:
🔬 Samuel Goodfellow, PhD (CHLA) opened the session with an in-depth look at a Bartonella case that highlighted the organism’s stealthy clinical presentation and the diagnostic hurdles it poses. His talk emphasized the importance of molecular detection and multidisciplinary collaboration in identifying elusive pathogens.
🧫 Amorce Lima, PhD (UCLA Health) followed with a fascinating case of Proteus mirabilis, underscoring its surprising pathogenic potential and antimicrobial resistance patterns. His discussion reinforced the evolving clinical relevance of this commonly encountered bacterium.
🧪 Shekina Gonzalez-Ferrer, PhD (UCLA Health) concluded with a dramatic and instructive case involving hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae. The case illustrated how molecular characterization and careful epidemiologic investigation are essential in recognizing emerging hypervirulent strains in healthcare settings.
Together, these presentations exemplified SCASM’s mission to advance microbiological science through shared experience, education, and collaboration — transforming challenging cases into opportunities for learning and innovation.
👏 A huge thank you to our speakers, attendees, and organizers for another engaging and informative meeting.

🧫 Specimen Trivia: A Journey from Collection to Action! 🧪

We had an amazing time at the Copan-sponsored talk, “Specimen Trivia: A Journey from Collection to Action”! 🎉
The session was both fun and informative, taking us through the fascinating process of specimen collection, transport, and testing — all the way to actionable results that make a real impact in the lab and beyond.
To make things even more engaging, we put our knowledge to the test with an interactive trivia game packed with fun questions about best practices, specimen types, and a few surprises along the way! 🧩💡
👏 Congratulations to our trivia winners, who walked away with some prizes — and major bragging rights!
A big thank-you to Copan for sponsoring this educational and entertaining session, and to everyone who joined in for making learning so much fun.
