✊Yesterday, on January 13th, the California State Assembly’s Higher Education Committee voted to pass AB 713, the Opportunity for All Act. AB 713, sponsored by the Coalition and Assemblymember José Luis Solache (D-62; ), would guarantee equal access to on-campus job opportunities for all students, regardless of immigration status, at the UC, CSU, and CA Community Colleges.

Together with our O4A Coalition partners, including SAFIRE at UC Irvine (), SPEAK at UC Davis (), IDEAS at UCLA (), and SURGE at Cal State LA (), IJAC mobilized alongside Asm. Solache to attend the hearing and demonstrate our support for the landmark bill.

Carlos Alarcón, Policy Analyst and IJAC co-founder, delivered a powerful witness testimony uplifting the voices of undocumented students across California. Similarly, President Aditi Hariharan expressed the need for all students to be treated fairly and with dignity. Hariharan also highlighted the critical importance of campus employment to all students’ financial, academic, and personal wellbeing.

✍️📃 The bill now heads to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for consideration. If signed into law, California would be the first state in the nation to guarantee equitable employment opportunities for all students. At a time of tremendous uncertainty for our immigrant communities, California must heed the challenge and embrace sound polices, like AB 713, that promote immigrant inclusion, educational opportunity, and economic growth.

🚨URGENT ACTION ALERT🚨

We are calling on all Californians to join us in demanding equal opportunity for all students, regardless of immigration status!

Alongside our champion , IJAC and the Opportunity for All Coalition are fighting to pass our bill, AB 713, or the Opportunity for All Act. If passed, this law would guarantee that all students at a California public college or university has equitable access to campus-based employment opportunities.

Currently, undocumented students cannot access the same opportunities as their peers as they are unjustly barred from jobs and other paid opportunities.

When students are unable to be paid for their work or obtain on-campus jobs, it significantly impacts their ability to make payments towards their tuition, supplies, housing, and other basic needs. It also does not allow for their work and perspective to be represented on their campus. Consequently, many students are forced to work off-campus jobs that are often exploitative, dangerous, and harmful to their health and wellbeing.

AB 713 begins to address this issue and is the result of the powerful organizing of the immigrant students at the heart of the bill. Now, we need your help to ensure California meets its promise to defend, protect, and empower all California students.

In a major win for immigrant and data privacy rights, a U.S. federal district court has stopped the IRS from sharing private taxpayer data with ICE and DHS.

The ruling halts data transfers tied to the Trump Administration’s immigration enforcement plans and puts strict limits on any future disclosures. The ruling comes after the IRS entered a controversial, novel agreement with DHS on August 7th, 2025. The agreement granted immigration enforcement official access to the private taxpayer data of roughly 47,000 people.

This decision is a critical step toward protecting their privacy, dignity, and safety. While we celebrate this decision, we remind everyone that undocumented workers contribute over $66 billion in federal taxes each year, yet remain excluded from the benefits those taxes fund. We are not the reason you can’t afford the cost of living: massive corporations and failed government policies are the reason.

IJAC will continue to defend every immigrant’s right to live free from fear and government surveillance.

🚨 THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA MUST DEFEND AND PROTRCT ITS UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS.

Amidst unrelenting attacks on our immigrant students and communities, the University of California is seeking to quietly threaten undocumented students’ access and success to an equitable higher education experience.

We refuse to stand idly by as the UC cowers to Trump and sells out our students, but we need YOUR help to do it.

🗣️ Join IJAC and immigrant student organizations from across the UC as we mobilize before the UC Board of Regents during their meeting at UCLA from Nov. 18-20!

✍️ Visit the link in the flyer (or find it in our bio) to learn more about what UC undocumented students are demanding from OUR University and how YOU can join us by taking action in solidarity with your undocumented students/peers! Access our public comment guide at tinyurl.com/DefendCAUndocStudents

✊ Solidarity is our strength. Join us in demanding UC keep its promises and stand by our students. Remind UC: UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS BELONG HERE!

For more than three decades, Kent Wong transformed the world through his teaching, guidance, and mentorship.

As Our Professor, Kent taught us that education is liberation, that community is power, and that, together, we can and will transform the conditions of our world. Above all, Kent always taught us that we are stronger when we stand together.

To honor that lesson, we invite you to join us on October 16, as students, alumni, colleagues, and friends come together to honor the life and legacy of The People’s Professor, Kent Wong.

We invite all students who Kent mentored to join us for a night of reflection, remembrance, and gratitude for all he gave to this world. The memorial and celebration will also be live-streamed via Instagram for all those who cannot make it into Los Angeles in time.

Throughout the evening, we will hear from students, alumni, and longtime colleagues of Kent who will share reflections and stories about his immeasurable impact. An open mic and candle lighting ceremony will follow, offering space for collective reflection.

We will also have a Memory Table, where attendees are encouraged to bring photos, books, letters, or physical reminders of Kent to collectively honor and celebrate his life. Together, we will create a living tribute to the man who built movements, shaped generations, and forever changed how we experience the world.

To sign up as a student/alumni speaker or if you have any questions, please email: [email protected].

The Immigrant Justice in Action Coalition (IJAC) is incredibly heartbroken as we mourn the loss of our greatest mentor and ally, Kent Wong.

Kent has been at the forefront of the struggle for a just, equitable world for decades. His impact and legacy is vast and multigenerational as he transformed everyone and everything around him.

Kent Wong was our immigrant communities’ greatest friend. He began and continued to teach the first class on the experiences of undocumented youth — highlighting and uplifting our stories and voices even when it wasn’t “the right time”. Alongside undocumented youth, Kent has further amplified our experiences through books, campaigns, policy change, and by empowering us directly. Kent made leaders, teachers, and organizers out of all of us; always finding just the right words and guidance to help us find our place in the world. More importantly, he taught us how to change it on our own terms.

Kent stood with us when we marched. At every protest, action, rally, Kent was there. In every campaign, Kent was there. Every single time. To know Kent was to experience the world our movements fight so hard for through a single person. That’s who Kent was: a glimpse into what we can all become, of the world we can build together.

This is an immeasurable loss. We will miss him forever. We will hold him in our hearts and remember him through our actions everyday.

IJAC will honor Kent Wong forever. Our organization, our members, the work we have done and continue to do all began with Kent. We will persist because of Kent.

REST IN POWER, KENT WONG.
