That's why DIY Girls is proud to honor Evelyn Cortez-Davis, P.E., BCEE, Director of Strategic Initiatives, Water System at the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power. With more than 30 years of leadership in the water industry, Evelyn has helped strengthen Los Angeles' water infrastructure while paving the way for future engineers. We'll celebrate Evelyn at the DIY Girls 2026 Gala, Building Strength Through Community, on September 10. Our annual gala raises critical funds to keep STEM programs free for girls and gender-expansive youth while celebrating the community that makes this work possible.

✨ A Summer STEM Camp for the books! ✨

After two weeks of designing, coding, creating, and collaborating, our campers celebrated everything they accomplished at our culminating STEM Expo!

Throughout the summer, students explored 3D modeling and printing, sustainability, engineering, and coding. At the Expo, they proudly shared their projects, demonstrated their new skills, and reflected on the confidence and friendships they built along the way.

In their own words:

💬 “One important thing I learned was to never give up and to work as a team.”

💬 “The most important thing I learned was engineering and a highlight was meeting my friend.”

These reflections capture what Summer STEM Camp is all about: helping girls and gender-expansive youth discover new possibilities, build technical skills, and see themselves as creators, engineers, and problem-solvers.

A huge thank you to our students for their curiosity and dedication, to their families for trusting us, and to our partners and supporters for making this experience possible.

The camp may have come to a close, but the skills, friendships, and memories our students created will stay with them for years to come. We can't wait to welcome another incredible group of young innovators to Summer STEM Camp 2027! 💜🚀

Huge thank you to Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment and the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (LADWP) for hosting our summer campers at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant last Friday!

Our campers had the incredible opportunity to tour the beautiful Japanese Garden and get an exclusive look at the Advanced Water Purification Facility construction site, guided by the outstanding engineering team from Jacobs Solutions Inc.

One of the day's biggest highlights was hearing directly from the women engineers helping shape the future of water reuse, including Sydney Saunders of Jacobs, Mylana Nguyen of LA Sanitation & Environment, Nina Espinoza of LADWP, and Kim Magee of Brown and Caldwell. Moderated by the Vice President of the Board of Public Works Jenny Chavez, the panel gave our students an inside look at the engineers' individual STEM journeys, the challenges they've overcome, and the passion that drives their work. Seeing women leading innovative infrastructure projects made STEM careers feel tangible, inspiring, and within reach.

Experiences like this are transformative! They allow our girls and gender-expansive youth to connect what they learn in the classroom to real-world careers, ask questions, and envision themselves as the engineers, innovators, and problem-solvers of tomorrow.

We're deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this unforgettable day possible. A special thank you to Brown and Caldwell, Leon & Walsh, and Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez for your incredible behind-the-scenes support. Because of your partnership, our campers left feeling inspired, empowered, and excited about the possibilities that STEM holds.

🎉 Week 1 of our Summer Camp was a success!

What an incredible first week of learning, creativity, and collaboration!

Our campers explored the exciting intersection of 3D design and sustainability by designing their own succulent planters. They brainstormed and sketched their ideas, built physical prototypes using playdough, and then transformed their concepts into digital 3D models using Tinkercad.

The learning didn't stop in the classroom! Campers also participated in team-building activities and enjoyed a campus nature walk, where they learned about the diverse plants and trees growing around them–all while building new friendships!

We're so proud of how much our students have already grown in just one week. Their curiosity, creativity, and confidence continue to shine as they take on new challenges together.

🌸 Next week, the adventure continues! Campers will create a pipe cleaner lotus flower and bring it to life using the Circuit Playground microcontroller. They'll learn block-based coding to program colorful LED lights, switches, and sensors.

🎉 We did it!

Together, our community surpassed our $6,000 goal for the You Don't Graduate Alone campaign. Thank you to everyone who gave, shared, and cheered for our students. Your support makes a lasting difference!

Because of this community, 115 alumni are now part of GANAS (Girls Action Network and Support), DIY Girls' alumni network, where they continue to receive mentorship, leadership opportunities, and a community that supports them through college and into their careers.

The impact is clear:
✨ 72% of alumni currently studying STEM are persisting in their programs
✨ 60% of our graduates have earned STEM degrees

This week, DIY Girls alumni returned to mentor the Class of 2026 as they prepare for college this fall–a powerful reminder that our students don't graduate alone.

As we celebrate this milestone, we're also excited about what's ahead!

Since 2012, DIY Girls has served more than 8,400 youth. We've learned that while early STEM experiences spark curiosity, long-term support helps students turn that curiosity into college degrees, careers, and economic mobility.

Beginning this summer, we're evolving our program model to reach even more students. Our elementary and middle school programs will transition to Summer STEM Camps at LA Mission College, creating a more immersive STEM experience on a college campus while expanding access for youth across our community.

At the same time, we'll continue strengthening our year-round high school engineering programs and growing GANAS so students receive support from their first STEM experience through college and into their careers.

✨ Meet the DIY Girls Class of 2026 ✨

Today we're celebrating 22 graduating seniors who are headed off to colleges and universities, including CSUN, Pasadena City College, and UC Berkeley, to pursue degrees in engineering, computer science, biology, and more.

Each graduate has her own story, goals, and path forward, but each one represents what's possible when youth have access to opportunities, mentorship, and a community that believes in them.

🚀 Jenny, who will be studying Aerospace Engineering at CSUN this fall, told us: ""I was okay with settling as a stocker at some store. Now I want to be an aerospace engineer.""

💻 Damaris, who discovered a passion for coding through DIY Girls and plans to pursue Computer Science at UC Berkeley this fall, shared: ""I discovered I have a deep passion for coding. The most valuable part is working on projects that express my creativity.""

⚙️ Perla, who will study Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley, reflected: ""The most valuable part of being an Invent Girl has been the community I have been able to join and create in the program.""

These are just three of the 22 incredible young women we're celebrating today.

As they begin college, they'll join GANAS (Girls Action Network and Support), our alumni network, where they'll continue to receive mentorship, professional development, and career readiness support.

Because no student succeeds alone.

We're in the final stretch of our campaign and only need $896.95 more to reach our $6,000 goal.

At this year's DIY Girls STEM Expo, students proudly showcased the incredible projects they designed and built throughout the year, celebrating creativity, innovation, and growth.

One of the most inspiring moments was welcoming DIY Girls alumna Marisol Jimenez back to support the next generation. While earning her Master's degree in Computer Science and working part-time, Marisol launched the Convivir Fund and awarded four $500 mini-grants to DIY Girls students.

💜 "Receiving the Convivir Fund mini-grant made me feel really supported and encouraged in my goals. It reminded me that there are people and organizations that believe in students like me and want to help us succeed." — Esmeralda, 12th Grade

Marisol's story is a powerful reminder that the impact of support doesn't end at graduation. Today, she's giving back to the same community that once invested in her.

📣 Calling All Rising 6th-Grade Girls and Gender-Expansive Youth! 📣

DIY Girls is excited to announce our upcoming 3D Design & Printing Summer Camp – an immersive 2-week STEAM experience designed for rising 6th graders!

This summer, DIY Girls will welcome 60 students to Los Angeles Mission College for a hands-on program where creativity meets technology. Participants will experience a college campus environment while learning to code, exploring 3D design and printing, connecting with inspiring guest speakers, and taking a fun field trip to a real-world STEM site.

🎓 100% of DIY Girls seniors go to college.

But graduation isn’t the finish line, it’s the moment things often get harder.

For 72% of our students, they’re the first in their families to navigate college. That means facing new systems, challenges, and decisions without a built-in roadmap.

That’s why we created GANAS — the Girls Action Network and Support program — our alumni mentorship and support network that helps students navigate college, STEM pathways, career exploration, and life after high school with guidance from mentors and community.

Today, GANAS supports 93 alumni:
✨ 54% are pursuing or have earned STEM degrees
✨ 75% of those in college are persisting in STEM
✨ 66% of graduates have earned STEM degrees
