For decades, Rob and Michele Reiner championed a powerful belief: every child deserves to feel safe, loved, supported, and free to thrive.

In this second installment, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jake Reiner reflect on Rob and Michele’s extraordinary legacy and what makes Children’s Institute so special to Los Angeles children and families.

Celebrating a New Chapter for Jordan Downs in Watts!

Children’s Institute President & CEO Martine Singer was proud to join . Maxine Waters, , civic and community leaders for the grand opening of Mariposa at Jordan Downs and the groundbreaking of a new Children’s Park.

Children’s Institute has a longstanding commitment to Jordan Downs residents through early childhood education programs, behavioral health services, as well as, Children Exposed to Violence and Project Fatherhood programs. As part of the community’s revitalization, CII will also open a new Head Start center for local children and families.

The opening of Mariposa marks a major milestone in the transformation of Jordan Downs, bringing affordable housing, work, and community spaces to Watts. The future Children’s Park will offer children and families dedicated play areas, a splash pad, and basketball courts.

We’re proud to stand alongside our community partners in building a brighter future for Watts, where children and families have greater opportunities to learn, grow, and flourish.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the strength, resilience, and cultural traditions passed down through generations. We also recognize the opportunity to heal from the challenges that may be passed down, including cycles of trauma that can impact children and families.

Research shows that many of us parent the way we were parented. But when stress, anger, or frustration arise, we have the power to choose a different path. A pause. A deep breath. A moment of calm. These small actions can help break generational cycles and create healthier, more nurturing relationships with our children.

At the Children’s Institute Early Childhood Education Health Fair, families learn practical tools for emotional regulation, helping both parents and children understand their feelings, manage big emotions, and respond with intention rather than reaction. By teaching skills like mindfulness, deep breathing, and self-awareness, we’re helping families build stronger connections and healthier futures.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re celebrating not only where we come from, but also the healing, growth, and positive change we’re creating for future generations. 🌱

We’re thrilled to announce that seven-time Grammy Award winner John Mayer will perform at Children’s Institute’s 8th Annual Cape & Gown Gala on Sunday, November 8, at The Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills. 🎶

For more than two decades, John Mayer has established himself as one of contemporary music’s most accomplished singer-songwriters and guitarists, with a career spanning pop, rock, blues, and Americana. Alongside his music, he has also built a longstanding commitment to philanthropy, supporting causes in education, the arts, health care, and veterans’ health.

John Mayer also has a special connection to the Reiner family. In 2007, he wrote and performed “Say (What You Need to Say)” for Rob Reiner’s film The Bucket List. The song went on to earn Mayer a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 2009.

This year’s gala will also honor Jamie Lee Curtis, who will receive the inaugural Michele & Rob Reiner Champion for Change Award, presented by Jake Reiner. The award celebrates the legacy of Michele and Rob Reiner and their decades of advocacy on behalf of children, families, and communities.

Children’s Institute’s Cape and Gown Gala celebrates individuals whose humanitarianism has helped put opportunity within reach for thousands of children and families.

Join us on Sunday November 8th, 2026, for a magical evening at the Beverly Wilshire, while honoring incredible people who support and advocate for CII’s mission and our Los Angeles communities.

This year, we are very honored to introduce the Michele and Rob Reiner Champions for Change Award. Michele and Rob Reiner’s effort to establish First 5 California has generated more than $12.5 billion for early childhood development, health, and school readiness, while their successful challenge to Proposition 8 restored marriage rights for same-sex couples in California and became a landmark victory for marriage equality nationwide.
