UPDATE: USAC Unanimously Passes the DSU’s Resolution on COVID-19!

In the USAC meeting on 09/27/23, the USAC unanimously passed the DSU’s proposed resolution, “A Resolution to Ensure UCLA’s Health, Safety, and Wellness in Response to COVID-19" with a 12-0-0 vote! This is a historic event that sets the precedent for Universities around the nation to follow. The DSU’s continued advocacy for a safer, more accessible campus and community shall not go unnoticed!

We in the DSU would like to thank everyone who has been supporting the resolution through all of its stages, from conception, to writing, to proposal, to approval through the USAC.

Disabled and high risk individuals are systemically neglected, and COVID-19 is an intersectional issue that impacts everyone, especially marginalized communities. This is an important step towards positive change for the UCLA community and beyond.

So what can you do to support? Please read through the slides to see our recommendations on how individuals and organizations can best support themselves and their communities!

UPDATE: USAC’s Emergency Meeting Results!!

Unfortunately, the resolution was put to a secret, anonymous vote, and did not pass, in a 7 ‘yes,’ 4 ‘no,’ 1 ‘abstain’ breakdown. In this situation, the required vote was 8 yes votes out of 12 total votes, which is the standard majority 2/3 vote required.

We believe that the student body deserves transparency from the USAC and to know how their representatives vote.

We are also additionally concerned as there is a section of the USAC bylaws that should have caused the USAC President to step in and vote, which would have decided the outcome of the resolution. No further clarification has been provided as to why the USAC President did not provide her vote, or what the bylaws that she is beholden to are during the meeting.

But we are not giving up! The next meeting is TONIGHT at 7:00 PM! We have revised the resolution again, implementing more changes based on feedback. The DSU hopes that with these revisions, the resolution will pass, and we will be able to take next steps with implementing the items on the resolution to help UCLA be a safer, more accessible campus for all.

UPDATE: USAC fails to pass DSU’s COVID-19 Resolution on 9/12/23.

The DSU wrote a resolution titled “A Resolution to Mandate Masking, Weekly PCR testing, and Upcoming COVID-19 Vaccines, and to Improve Ventilation, and Reinstate the COVID-19 Task Force” and presented it to USAC. It failed in a 6-0-6 vote, meaning 6 in favor, 0 not in favor, and 6 abstains.

Both the actions of much of USAC, as well as the voting outcome, are very disappointing. The DSU plans to revise its current resolution into a new one to be presented, but we need your support! Call on your organizations to support the DSU, and call on your council-members to demand visibility for this issue and hold them accountable. Contact USAC council-members and the USAC president to advocate for an emergency meeting to be held for a revised version of the resolution before the start of the school year!
