Today's agency highlight is Social Model Recovery Systems! UCEPP-SMRS staff successfully organized the 23rd Annual Black History Month Event, bringing together 200 participants and collaborating with service providers like My Friends House, The Department of Mental Health, and the Wesley Clinic. The event featured games, food, music, and art, fostering a sense of unity and celebrating the black diaspora. By hosting this event annually, we aim to dispel negative perceptions of Skid Row and create a safe space within the parks, countering media propaganda. This event is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the Skid Row community and drive positive change.

This month, we will be sharing highlights from the wonderful orgs that make up our coalition! Today's agency highlight comes from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Substance Use Prevention Program. They hosted this year’s first community summit, “Seeds of Change: Community Summit” on May 20th at Alliance Leichtman-Levine Environmental Science High School, located in Northeast Los Angeles. The summit focused on offering a space to uplift voices of youth and youth adult allies as well as creating a space for advocacy. Presenters consisted of parents from KYCC Prevention Community Council, Alejandra Huerta from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and a youth panel with students from Marshall High School and Alliance Leichtman-Levine Environmental Science High School. Lastly, the summit closed with remarks from Children’s Hospital Prevention Providers and Assemblywoman, Wendy Carrillo. We are grateful and appreciate the support from all our community partners who attended our event, our amazing presenters, and community members for their participation.

CoPALM held a community town hall on Thursday, April 20 to address the topic of fentanyl. Over 40 community members were able to attend and participate in an informational workshop about fentanyl facilitated by Dr. Siddarth Puri. Afterwards, Soo from KYCC and Darwin from IPS were able to lead a Narcan training. We then were able to listen to one of our fellow community members and his lived experiences struggling with substance use and his journey to sobriety. Thank you to all our guest speakers and everyone who attended our Town Hall. We hope that we can continue to spread awareness on the fentanyl epidemic and continue to build strong prevention efforts.
