Join us next Thursday, October 8th for an artist panel and closing reception of “Into the Pluriverse” curated by Nordia Simmonds nordia

We’re thrilled to have bianca nozaki-nasser of Practicing Futures leading a conversation exploring the practices and artistic voice of each exhibiting artist: Nia Lee, April Bey, and Jessica Taylor Bellamy. The closing gathering offers an opportunity to collectively reflect on the themes of the exhibition, and the role of artists in making possible other worlds.

Please join us in congratulating this year’s Sovern Curator in Residence awardee, !

As an emerging museum professional and academic, Nina is deeply committed to art and representation for underserved communities, drawing on her experiences as a q***r, second-generation Filipino-American and her lifelong search for points of connection across cultural and artistic contexts. In working to make art as accessible as possible, she hopes to facilitate a critical and inclusive relationship between art institutions and the public which they serve, while also highlighting the cultural diversity and artistic excellence of the numerous populations which it represents.

Stay tuned to follow her journey and the exhibition she will be curating in 2027.

Sovern LA is a non-profit art gallery and healing justice center. Our small but mighty team of four execute quarterly exhibitions and over 200 events annually to support emerging Black, Indigenous, women and non-binary folks of color (BIWOC+) working in creative industries. We regularly collaborate with visual and performance artists, cultural workers, graphic designers, and community healers across diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This work is often a labor of love, and we depend on our community to work alongside us in making art and healing spaces more accessible to those who need it most.

At Sovern LA, we bring art together with intentionally curated programming to activate the themes of each exhibition. This model allows artists to break down the meaning and practice of their work for community members. All of our programs and events are free or donation-based, and reflect our belief that art is transformative when we lower the barriers to entry! No one is turned away due to lack of funds. Easing Pain for Social Change: Acupressure + Chinese Herbalism Training

Saturdays, July 11, 18, 25 with Camellia Dao-Ling (李道玲)

Healing justice teaches us that care is not separate from movement work, it is movement work. When our healthcare systems fail us (waitlists that outlast the pain, copays that cost more than gas, providers who don't listen) we return to what has always been ours: the folkways, the plant medicine, the hands-on knowledge that lived in community long before it lived in a clinic.

This training is an invitation back into that lineage. Over three Saturdays, Camellia will guide us through the energy pathways of the body and the herbs as plantcestors, ancestral medicine we're remembering, not discovering for the first time. You'll leave with real skills: acupressure points you can offer a roommate with a headache, herbal knowledge you can trade and share as resources tighten, a fuller medicine bag for the care work already happening in your community.

This is what it looks like to build the infrastructure of care outside of broken systems. This is healing justice in practice.

That’s right. This one’s for curators.

Sovern LA is thrilled to announce the inaugural Curator in Residency Program. We are now accepting applications.

One emerging BIPOC youth curator will be awarded with the opportunity to plan a 3-month exhibition at Sovern LA from conception to ex*****on with mentorship from Essence Harden, Essenceh the prominent curator, arts writer, and academic, Senior Curator at YBCA, known most recently for their curation work for EXPO Chicago, the Focus section for Frieze LA, and the Hammer Museum’s biennial “Made in LA”. The awardee will receive the unique opportunity of being stewarded into the Los Angeles arts landscape by a seasoned, community-rooted, experimental and esteemed curator while being platformed by Sovern. They will receive a $2500 stipend and a separate budget for exhibiting artist fees. The exhibition will run March - May 2027.

The resident will be supported in developing their curatorial voice, learning practices to ground how their work contributes to ongoing cultural conversations, and to explore curation as a cultural and political practice. The resident will be encouraged to experiment and develop skills around artist-centered collaboration as they are supported through the logistics of exhibition planning, including installation and related program development. Alongside real-life curatorial experience and mentorship, the resident will have the opportunity to discuss professional sustainability and how to navigate arts institutions in a way that maintains integrity within an often extractive system.

Eligibility
The residency is open to BIPOC youth who are between the ages of 18 and 25, who are based in L.A. County.

There are 3 days left to apply to Sovern’s Youth Artist in Residency open to LA based BIPOC artists!

Two awardees will be selected. We can’t wait to see your work! Applications close Monday by midnight.

In addition to a $7000 stipend and 3 month exhibition opportunity at the end of 2026, awardees will receive the unique experience of ongoing one-on-one mentorship with the legendary Dale Brockman Davis Dale Brockman Davis — Los Angeles–based artist, educator, and community activist. As co-founder of Brockman Gallery, Dale has played a transformative role in shaping Los Angeles’ cultural landscape since the 1960s. His multidisciplinary artistic practice and decades of experience cultivating community-centered artistic dialogue provide residents with the rare opportunity to receive guidance and wisdom from one of the city’s most influential cultural figures. Through regular studio feedback and conversation, residents will be supported in navigating artistic challenges, expanding conceptual ideas, and developing their work over the course of the residency.
