That’s right. This one’s for curators.

Sovern LA is thrilled to announce the inaugural Curator in Residency Program. We are now accepting applications.

One emerging BIPOC youth curator will be awarded with the opportunity to plan a 3-month exhibition at Sovern LA from conception to ex*****on with mentorship from Essence Harden, Essenceh the prominent curator, arts writer, and academic, Senior Curator at YBCA, known most recently for their curation work for EXPO Chicago, the Focus section for Frieze LA, and the Hammer Museum’s biennial “Made in LA”. The awardee will receive the unique opportunity of being stewarded into the Los Angeles arts landscape by a seasoned, community-rooted, experimental and esteemed curator while being platformed by Sovern. They will receive a $2500 stipend and a separate budget for exhibiting artist fees. The exhibition will run March - May 2027.  

The resident will be supported in developing their curatorial voice, learning practices to ground how their work contributes to ongoing cultural conversations, and to explore curation as a cultural and political practice. The resident will be encouraged to experiment and develop skills around artist-centered collaboration as they are supported through the logistics of exhibition planning, including installation and related program development. Alongside real-life curatorial experience and mentorship, the resident will have the opportunity to discuss professional sustainability and how to navigate arts institutions in a way that maintains integrity within an often extractive system.

Eligibility
The residency is open to BIPOC youth who are between the ages of 18 and 25, who are based in L.A. County.

There are 3 days left to apply to Sovern’s Youth Artist in Residency open to LA based BIPOC artists!

Two awardees will be selected. We can’t wait to see your work! Applications close Monday by midnight.

In addition to a $7000 stipend and 3 month exhibition opportunity at the end of 2026, awardees will receive the unique experience of ongoing one-on-one mentorship with the legendary Dale Brockman Davis Dale Brockman Davis — Los Angeles–based artist, educator, and community activist. As co-founder of Brockman Gallery, Dale has played a transformative role in shaping Los Angeles’ cultural landscape since the 1960s. His multidisciplinary artistic practice and decades of experience cultivating community-centered artistic dialogue provide residents with the rare opportunity to receive guidance and wisdom from one of the city’s most influential cultural figures. Through regular studio feedback and conversation, residents will be supported in navigating artistic challenges, expanding conceptual ideas, and developing their work over the course of the residency.

Dellis Frank () is a multidisciplinary artist that brings together various materials to create sculptural masterpieces. Here work both challenges white-body supremacy and serves as altars of reverence to support the journey of embodying the sacred. She taught in LAUSD for over two decades, centering the disparities she has witnessed in communities of color through both her pedagogy and her art practice.

The talented will be leading an ALL AGES drawing and painting exploration on Sunday June 7 at .la !

Open to ages 5+

Kiddos and adults welcome!

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of drawing and painting through the study of flowers. 🌹

Using a curated selection of fresh flowers and visual references, participants will observe form, color, and texture while developing their own creative interpretations.

Each participant will choose their subject and preferred medium— pencil, watercolor, or acrylic— encouraging independent decision-making and personal expression.

Guided demonstrations will cover simplifying complex forms into basic shapes, building structure through sketching, and applying color through layering and mixing techniques.

Rest and Ritual is a guided experience of tea ceremony, meditation, and sound healing. Each element is offered slowly and with intention to help you settle your body, quiet the mind, and return to presence. It is a space to rest, reconnect, and be held in stillness within community.

Chanel Thomas is a therapeutic bodyworker, sound healing facilitator, and the founder of Zen Fairy Wellness. Her work centers on slowing the nervous system, reconnecting people to their bodies, and creating spaces for deep rest and presence.
