The Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIACC) classifies literacy into six levels, ranging from below level 1 (BL1) to Level 5. PIAAC literacy levels help us to understand the distribution of literacy skills among adults and identify those who may need support with literacy development.

Here's a quick breakdown of the levels:
Below Level 1: Can recognize words and understand very basic phrases.
Level 1: Can locate simple information in everyday materials like flyers or short notes.
Level 2: Can use short texts to make decisions, like reading schedules or instructions.
Level 3: Can connect ideas, follow directions, and compare information across texts.
Level 4: Can interpret complex documents, evaluate evidence, and synthesize ideas.
Level 5: Can analyze and draw deeper meaning from abstract, lengthy material.
