The Davyd Whaley Foundation

The Davyd Whaley Foundation The Davyd Whaley Foundation seeks to support artists in Southern California.

Davyd Whaley devoted the happiest and most productive years of his life to his work as a painter. His life ended just as he was beginning to achieve the recognition and success for which he worked so hard. The quality of the paintings that have found homes in national collections, as well as the paintings that he left behind, are testimony to Davyd’s creative accomplishment. Davyd believed that hi

s highest calling was “to create a thing of beauty, which may comfort or inspire others.” Every aspect of art fascinated him, but he also loved people, particularly those who are in need. He lived to serve and worked tirelessly to support others, whether teaching art to the underprivileged, counseling grieving families in hospitals, or teaching terminally ill and war-scarred children to paint. Davyd was awarded Volunteer of the Year by Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in 2012. Davyd supported his friends from all walks of life, and particularly those who shared his creative passion. He showed up for other artists, supported their endeavors, bought their work, and gave of his time and energy to promote community. To honor Davyd’s generous spirit and to preserve his memory, the Davyd Whaley Foundation supports artists in the Los Angeles community by offering grants to assist in the fulfillment of their vision.

We are pleased to announce that the inaugural Davyd Whaley Memorial Scholarship at the Art Students League in New York, funded by the Davyd Whaley Foundation, has been awarded to Judy Giera.

Judy Giera (she/her) is a Brooklyn based artist whose work elevates gender euphoria alongside transgender joy while examining the transmisogyny that defines surviving as a transgender woman in America today. Moving broadly across painting, video, and performance with a sense of humor and weirdness, Judy’s practice prioritizes and elevates her non-cisgender experience of womanhood. She holds an MFA in Art-Painting (Lehman College-City University of New York), an MFA in Theatre (The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University) and she spent a year in the graduate Performance + Performance Studies program at Pratt Institute.

The photos show Judy’s work:
(1) Just a T Gurl From Brooklyn, 2019.
(2) the performance of the self(s) 1 and 2, 2021
(3) Still from Ultimate Unadulterated Gogdog With Myself Tho (no worries darling, I’ll just finish myself off) [a musical cabaret in one act}, 2021.

Davyd Whaley’s hands.

“A man who works with his hands is a laborer; a man who works with his hands and his brain is a craftsman; but a man who works with his hands and his brain and his heart is an artist.”

My beloved Davyd Whaley would have been 53 today. He is never far from my thoughts. —Norman Buckley

“He was footprints in the snow.

Not all loves are meant to last.
Some are meant to grace you briefly,
before fading,
somehow leaving the impression
that the world is just a little bit better
because you had been touched by
something so beautiful it was impossible
to grasp.”
