Matt Nelson created the WeRateDogs Twitter account in November of 2015, he posted his first GoFundMe for a dog in need in 2016, and since 2017, the WeRateDogs community has been fundraising every single Friday. They have raised over $2 million to help families pay for their dogs’ medical bills. Every week, hundreds of pleas for help are sent to the account, often totaling millions in requested fun

ds. Matt and the rest of the WeRateDogs team have witnessed the devastating toll medical bills can have on a family and just how expensive a trip to the emergency vet can be. At the beginning of 2020, in addition to the weekly audience-funded campaign, Matt and team started funding a GoFundMe campaign themselves and encouraging their audience to get medical insurance for their pets. On August 8, 2020, Matt adopted Doug, a now 11-year-old German shepherd. Doug had severe ear infections, was visibly arthritic, and does not get along with any other dogs. For these reasons, it was very unlikely he would’ve made it out of the shelter had he not been rescued. He is an excellent example of an amazing dog whose medical and behavioral issues lessened the likelihood of them finding a forever home. After dealing with the harsh realities of pet medical bills and adopting Doug, Matt was inspired to launch the 15/10 Foundation, named for the highest rating any dog has ever received on WeRateDogs. The Foundation fills a void in the animal welfare world by sponsoring dogs with behavioral or medical issues unlikely to ever make it out of the shelter. It hopes to channel the overwhelming support the WeRateDogs audience has shown for years into effective care for the dogs who need it most. The nonprofit move feels like a natural progression for any powerful community, and we cannot wait to see just how many lives we can change for the better ❤️

15/10 Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity.

This is Brie. Shortly after being spayed, she began showing alarming symptoms like lethargy, loss of appetite, and vaginal bleeding. She was rushed to the vet, where tests revealed that a tiny portion of her uterus tissue was left behind during surgery, and caused a life-threatening infection.

Thanks to your support, we were able to cover the emergency surgery she needed to survive. We’re thrilled to report that she has since fully recovered and found a forever home! Her new family describes her as a “76-pound lap dog and the absolute sweetest dog in the entire world.” She also gained a canine sibling who could pass as her twin (frame 7), and the two are clearly peas in a pod ❤️‍🩹

Maybelline found her forever home! Thanks to your support a few months ago, we were able to sponsor the surgery she needed to correct her elongated soft palate and abnormal sinuses. She continued to lean on her emotional support laundry basket throughout recovery… now she just leans on her new brother. Fortunately, he seems more than capable of fulfilling that responsibility ❤️‍🩹

This is Bebe. She arrived at her rescue at four months old, underweight and suffering from seizures. Tests confirmed she was born with a liver shunt, a condition that causes blood to bypass the liver instead of being properly filtered.

As a result, toxins build up in her bloodstream and affect her nervous system, leading to neurological symptoms like circling. The shunt also prevents her body from absorbing essential nutrients, contributing to significant weight loss and stunted growth.

She requires surgery to implant a device that will gradually close the abnormal blood vessel and restore liver function. On Friday, we asked our email community to help cover her care and you all raised $12,500 in just over an hour! We’ll pupdate you on her post-op progress here ❤️‍🩹

This is Fredo. He was found as a stray suffering from bilateral cherry eye, which required surgery. If left untreated, it can cause chronic infections and blindness. Despite his condition, Fredo showed love to everyone he met, so we knew he’d easily find a family once he healed up.

Thanks to you, we were able to cover his care. He made a full recovery, and has been adopted! Rumor has it he hasn’t stopped zooming ever since (frame 4) ❤️‍🩹

This is Lena. She was found as a stray, limping beside her 3-month-old puppy. They were taken to a rescue, where it became clear that Lena only has one fully functional limb. Her front left leg is broken in multiple places, and her kneecaps repeatedly slip out of their joints.

Due to the severity of her front leg injury, she requires surgery on both hind legs to restore the strength and stability she needs to walk comfortably again. Unfortunately, the fractures in her front left leg have gone untreated so long that surgical repair is no longer possible, meaning the leg will most likely need to be amputated.

Earlier this month, our email community fully covered her care! She has since had her first surgery and is now recovering in a foster home. With her puppy adopted, we’re so glad Lena is finally getting the help she needs too. We'll keep you pudpated on her journey ❤️‍🩹

Mandarin is adopted! Thanks to your support a couple months ago, we were able to sponsor the surgery she needed to fix her broken leg. After four short weeks of laser therapy, her leg was strong enough to run, leap, play, and most exciting of all... go home with her new mom ❤️‍🩹
