What does it take for a survivor to leave, and what keeps them stuck?
The truth is, leaving is rarely about a lack of desire. More often, it’s about the complex layers of survival, safety, trauma, and circumstance that make leaving incredibly difficult.
There are often countless practical realities survivors are carrying:
▶️ No safe place to go
▶️ Little or no work history
▶️ Fear of retaliation or violence
▶️ Financial burdens and debt piling up
▶️ Trauma bonds and emotional attachment
▶️ Lack of support systems
▶️ Children or family depending on them
▶️ Fear of judgment
▶️ The overwhelming challenge of starting over
Leaving is rarely as simple as “just walking away.”
For many survivors, leaving can mean risking everything they know in hopes that something safer exists on the other side.
