Prayers for the Silent Souls
Traveling the entire East Coast of Malaysia visiting remote Vietnamese Boat People cemeteries that don’t get many visitors. Mass graves of 120, 40, 20, 5 depending on how many washed ashore that day spread along the coast…. Many graves are unnamed.
The odds of survival were nearly 50/50 with the inevitable dangers of pirates, storms, starvation, getting lost, and violence at sea.
Because of the scale of the tragedy, the world finally took notice and provided relief. The United Nations and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) established refugee camps and began processing survivors.
Yet even today, hundreds of thousand of VBP’s (Vietnamese Boat People) still remain unaccounted for.
Many disappeared without records, without graves, and without their families ever learning what became of them.
Let’s us pray. Let’s us remember. Let’s us continue to seek, to honor their journeys, and to keep their stories alive so they are never be forgotten.
