Immigrants Are LA (IRLA) is a diverse, local community-led coalition of more than 100 immigrant rights groups building an equitable future for immigrants in LA.

New in CALÓ News: “Immigrant Families Carried LA Through a Hard Year. The Budget Should Carry Them Forward.”

IRLA co-chairs Angelica Salas of CHIRLA and Aquilina Soriano Versoza of Pilipino Workers Center share stories from elders like Jose, Rafael, and Lydia. They worked for decades, raised families, and helped build this county. Now they are asking for a fair chance to age with dignity.

The County took real steps this year. The next budget can do more by making rent relief permanent and expanding guaranteed income for elders.

On September 24, 130 community members came together for “Aging with Dignity: Immigrant Seniors Call for UBI/GBI,” a townhall on Guaranteed Basic Income. 🧡

Nearly 20% of LA County residents live in poverty, the highest rate of any county in California. Immigrant seniors, especially those who are undocumented, are too often left without a safety net.

Our panelists, Rafael Garcia (CLEAN), Jose Cleto Camaal (CIELO), and Lydia Carandang (PWC), shared their experiences with the financial challenges of aging without security. Together, we called on the LA County Board of Supervisors to fund an $8.3 million GBI pilot program for 250 eligible residents age 65+.

A new resource is now available in the IRLA hub.

Supporting Immigrant Communities: A Preparedness and Response Guide for Shelter Providers, developed by Unseen, is a practical guide for organizations serving people experiencing homelessness. It covers legal protections, rights during immigration enforcement encounters, how to prepare shelter sites, and how to support participants and staff before, during, and after an incident.

If you work with or know someone who accesses shelter services, this resource may be useful.

Tonight is the night.

From 6 to 8 PM, IRLA is hosting Aging with Dignity, a town hall where older immigrant adults will share their stories directly with Los Angeles County supervisors and their staff.

These are people who spent decades working, paying taxes, and contributing to this County. People excluded from Social Security and federal assistance despite a lifetime of contributions. People who, right now, have no safety net when they can no longer work.

On September 29, the Board of Supervisors votes on the supplemental budget. What happens tonight is part of that conversation.

Esta noche es la noche.

De 6 a 8 PM, IRLA organiza Aging with Dignity, un town hall donde personas adultas mayores inmigrantes compartiran sus historias directamente con supervisores del Condado de Los Angeles y sus equipos.

Son personas que pasaron decadas trabajando, pagando impuestos y contribuyendo a este Condado. Personas excluidas del Seguro Social y de los programas de asistencia federal a pesar de toda una vida de contribuciones.

El 29 de septiembre, la Junta de Supervisores vota el presupuesto suplementario. Lo que pasa esta noche es parte de esa conversacion.
