UNITE-LA is grateful to the 47 California business organizations that joined us in opposing proposed changes to Head Start.

For more than 60 years, Head Start has provided eligible families with free, high-quality early learning and health services, strengthening families while helping build a strong workforce pipeline for California businesses. Research shows that investing in Head Start delivers lasting economic benefits, with every $1 invested generating an estimated $7–$9 return.

If enacted, the proposed rule changes would eliminate many of Head Start’s quality and service standards, putting these short- and long-term benefits at risk for children, parents and businesses.

UNITE-LA and our business partners urge the Administration to rescind this proposal.

Last week, UNITE-LA President Alysia Bell joined Ascend at the Aspen Institute’s Forward With Families Forum: Los Angeles County.

Leaders from across LA County, Pennsylvania and Kentucky gathered together in Los Angeles as we discussed paths to increasing childcare access for parents pursuing postsecondary credentials. By surrounding student parents with the childcare support they need to complete their education, we are laying the groundwork to move families forward for generations.

The insights and strategies shared will help shape our continued work to expand access and support student parents across our communities.

Thank you to everyone who joined UNITE-LA and the National Women's Law Center for our virtual webinar, “Strategies to Support Student Parent Success,” last week during National Student Parent Month!

We’re grateful to our speakers, Assemblymember Gail Pellerin, Jessica Lee of WorkLife Law and student parent Lizeth Garcia, as well as everyone who joined the conversation on how we can better support student parents in education and the workforce.

Key takeaway: Child care is not just a family or women’s issue. It’s an economic issue. Policy changes are critical to ensuring students have the resources and supports they need in order to succeed.
