I’ve spoken with Thomas yesterday and he was in good spirits. I met Thomas when he played at Harry Anigley🇨🇦, with Matty. Matthew (Matty) played receiver and p/k returner, and Thomas played on defense and defended the best receiver for the other team, whatever team that it was. Matty and Thomas played for my alma mater, Santa Barbara City College, for a year but transferred out last year. Matty attended San Francisco City College, and Thomas went to San Diego Mesa. He wasn’t able to play last year for some technical reasons when he transferred. I’m excited for him, and he should have a good season because he’s been putting in work and handling his business in the classroom as well.

Over 20 years ago, way before becoming the President of Alumni in Action (AIA) I found another calling. As a Firefighter at a station who put on a annual Christmas dinner for local underprivileged children, I got to put on the ‘Red Suit’ and represent Santa. I got to listen to Christmas wishes of young children and distribute gifts, the joy I brought to children and their families was unmatched! Since then I purchased my own suit and have volunteered every Christmas to be Santa for hospitals, including the Sherman Oaks Children’s Burn Foundation. I have also served at churches, schools, and various other holiday events. The spirit of giving has been in my blood and I have dedicated most of my life to doing good things for others; as a career Fighter/Paramedic, Santa, and now through Alumni in Action. Our non-profit was started to help and guide kids and their families through football. With my dear friend and Brother, Craig Ellis, the Founder and CEO of AIA (pictures here with me) through Alumni in Action, we hope to continue giving to our community.

D‑W, texted me the news about #53, Rob Martin, it stopped me in my tracks. I knew he had been ill, but I’d recently heard he was doing better, so hearing of his passing hit hard. At the same time, I felt a sense of relief knowing his suffering is finally over.

Mr. Martin and I go all the way back to my Raiders days — he was a linebacker, and I was a running back. Rod was the best coverage linebacker in the NFL. During practice, whenever we worked on blocking protection, I always lined up against him. If you want to be the best, you go against the best. His smile could light up any room, and his athleticism made him a handful for any running back.

No more pain, no more struggle. You’re in the arms of the angels now, Rod. Until we meet again — Rest in Peace.
