Freewaves

Freewaves We advance relevant dialogues about art, race, and gender in a creative, safe, and diverse space. On and offline. Locally and internally.

LA Freewaves freewaves.org is a 33-year-old public art organization in Los Angeles that has worked creatively online and in the streets to advance issues about race and gender. We facilitate people overcoming their biases by providing creative material and safe space to relate to a broader spectrum of society. We are broadcasting a psychic liberation for our collective evolution through sharing ex

periences. With X-aMEN-ing Masculinities (2022), Freewaves extends its multi-year engagement with themes of gender acceptance, diversity, and transition into the often-criticized but under-explored sphere of masculinity. We have spent the last four years exploring themes of feminism in relation to the non-binary gender spectrum. We began by using a set of 10 postcards, each with an image and a related question on the back that viewers answered anonymously, along with a set of feminists PSAs which aired on the Metro TVs before our Out the Window project ended. Freewaves’ 2011-2014 project, OUT THE WINDOW, presented hundreds of artists’ videos to L.A. Metro’s 1 million daily bus riders on Transit TV. Creative videos use open-ended, humorous, relatable and questioning strategies to approach viewers with vital images. 2000 buses each have 2 screens and speakers inside. After every video an evocative question about the videos appears with a phone number to text responses. Supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, LA Arts Recovery Fund, National Endowment for the Arts, City of LA Dept of Cultural Affairs, LA County Arts Commission, California Arts Council, and people like you.

Los Angeles is rich in creativity, but access to arts funding and infrastructure has not been evenly distributed.

For more than 35 years, Freewaves has shown up across Los Angeles, in Central, East, South, and West LA, partnering with artists to transform parks, storefronts, museums, beaches, and streets into spaces for connection, reflection, and collective care. Many of these projects were rooted in communities that have long created deep cultural impact while receiving limited investment.
Freewaves has told a story of artists and communities gathering together in public spaces as sites of expression. We have helped create these moments built on trust, sustained relationships, and a commitment to keeping art free and accessible.
Your year-end gift supports:

💜 Paid opportunities and commissions for artists
💜 Community-centered public art projects across LA
💜 Accessible programming in neighborhoods with limited arts access
💜 The infrastructure needed to sustain this work long-term
As we look back on where we have been, we are also investing in what comes next: deeper impact, stronger support for artists, and more equitable creative futures across Los Angeles.

💛 Give before the end of the year and help the work ahead. Become a $5 Sustainer.
