Meet Banksy, Frida Kahlo, and Picasso!

This trio of tiny artists arrived at the Bakersfield shelter as strays, painfully thin and clearly having been on their own for a while. All it took was some food, warmth, and love, and these three bounced back to life almost overnight!

At about 3 months old, they’re believed to be Chihuahua mixes (the shelter guessed possibly some Labrador in there too), though their true mix is a mystery. What’s not a mystery is their gorgeous, unique chocolate brown coloring! You won’t find puppies that look quite like these anywhere else. Full grown, they’re expected to stay small, likely topping out around 10-12 lbs.

Don’t let the tiny size fool you, these three have huge hearts. They are deeply affectionate and thrive on physical closeness, especially being held and carried. Honestly, their happy place is snuggled in someone’s arms, and they’ll happily stay there all day if you let them.

Banksy, Frida Kahlo, and Picasso are looking for foster or forever homes where they’ll get plenty of cuddles, patience as they continue to grow and gain strength, and the chance to just be loved little dogs after a rough start. If you’ve got room in your lap (and your heart), one of these little masterpieces could be perfect for you 🐶

Meet Magic!

Magic is a 2 year old neutered gray Pitty mix who is living proof that you should never judge a book by its cover. This handsome boy may look like a muscular little tank, but underneath that strong exterior is one of the biggest softies you will ever meet.

We first saw Magic in a heartbreaking video on Instagram. He was in the San Bernardino shelter being attacked by his kennel mates. He was crying and bleeding, but instead of fighting back, Magic just tried to get away. The shelter was housing three or more dogs together in each kennel, and with dogs spending so much time confined and going stir crazy, fights were unfortunately common. We knew we could not leave him there, so we pulled Magic the very next day.

We were able to learn more about Magic from the people who originally found him. They kept him safely in their home for three days while trying to locate his owners, and during that time they discovered what a wonderful dog he truly is. Magic was great with the kids and dogs in the home and was an absolute sweetheart.

And that is Magic in a nutshell. He is a total love bug who wants nothing more than to be close to people and give everyone he meets a million kisses. Despite everything he went through, he has remained incredibly gentle and trusting. He looks like he could be the toughest dog in the room, but he is really just a big mush who wants to love and be loved.

Magic deserves a home where he will never have to be afraid again. A place where he can finally relax, feel safe, and spend his days being the sweet, goofy love bug that he is. If you are looking for a big softie with a heart of gold, Magic might just be your guy.

Two days ago, our own PWB family members Rhonda and Lee said goodbye to their beloved Buster. They adopted Buster as a little puppy from a tough rescue situation - but beautiful baby Buster couldn’t have found more dedicated and loving pawrents. He was the most spoiled King in the world. He found all the best sticks, was surrounded by rooms filled with toys, went on trips to the beaches and mountains, always surrounded by love. A few years ago when Rhonda joined the PWB team, Buster became a (sometimes reluctant but still devoted) foster brother. He fostered so many dogs in need, showing them how to be happy and spoiled. Eventually, one of those fosters stuck around, and he had his very own little brother - Slash. After that, the boys were inseparable (but with Buster always leading the pack).
When Buster’s parents learned that he had degenerative myelopathy, they knew they couldn’t let him suffer. He got to the second stage, and they didn’t want him to suffer through the very painful third. So they let him cross the rainbow bridge surrounded by so much love. To say he will be missed is a tremendous understatement. He will always be with us. He made the world better, and we know he’s looking down at us along with so many other happy and perfect dogs.
Thank you to our new favorite artist Ava Suppelsa who graciously agreed to do this collaborative post with us, in honor of Buster. Rhonda sent me her song, and we ugly cried nonstop after hearing it 💜 we thought her song would be a beautiful tribute to Big Papa Buster.

We’re fundraising today for Fundraising Friday, for beautiful senior boy Jacko! Jacko came to us with two of his friends after many years on the streets. Jacko came to us with almost no teeth, a little slow to move around but as sweet as can be!
Jacko needed a very extensive teeth cleaning, and blood work to make sure he was safe to go under anesthesia. Jacko got his very few and tiny remaining teeth cleaned, and clean bill of health from his bloodwork!
