Celebrating and Honoring the Life of Ryan Koeppel
The Ryan Koeppel Foundation is being founded by Carin, Jeff, Sam & Sydney Koeppel in memory of our son and brother. Ryan was tragically killed at age 16 in a car accident on August 6, 2020 by a reckless driver as he was leaving the driving range following a night of hitting golf balls with his friends. Ryan was an incredible young man, filled with

so much joy and promise. He was a high achieving student at Heschel and then deToledo High School, played sports including baseball and flag football, enjoyed and excelled at film editing, volunteered his time for charities including Save a Child's Heart and The Harold Robinson Foundation, and was a camp counselor. He had the most infectious smile and laugh. He had the best sense of humor. He made everyone he met feel important and special. He always included people and made sure feelings weren't hurt. Ryan embodied the best of all of us. Ryan was an amazing son, twin brother to Sydney, younger brother to Sam, admired cousin to 3 young boys, a grandson, a nephew, and a loyal friend. He loved his family and brought so much joy to everyone. Everyone knew Ryan for his glasses. He wore glasses from the age of 4, and was most recognized for his sports goggles, which he gave up in 8th grade. Our goal with the Ryan Koeppel Foundation is to provide underserved communities with glasses. In fact, we want to partner with the company who makes sports goggles to provide the goggles and eye exam to children that play contact sports and cannot afford them. In addition to the focus on eyes, Ryan loved volunteering for Save A Child's Heart, and we will be finding ways to partner with this amazing organization to support them. Our daughter, Sydney, started a club at deToledo HS called “See The Joy” to develop programs to benefit the foundation. It is our hope to expand the club to other high schools in the Los Angeles community and beyond. The Ryan Koeppel Foundation will honor Ryan’s memory and honor the joy he brought to life. Not a day goes by that Ryan isn’t in our thoughts. Today marks five years since his passing, and we take this moment to reflect on how that loss has shaped us as a family.

Grief doesn’t get easier with time. There are still moments of profound sadness. But we carry on—because we believe that’s what Ryan would have wanted. And because, in truth, what other choice do we have?

So much has happened in these five years. We’ve embraced joy where we’ve found it, even as we continue to live with the ache of what’s been lost. It’s a strange dichotomy—celebrating life’s milestones while mourning the moments Ryan never got to experience.

It’s especially poignant watching Ryan’s friends grow from teenagers into young adults. Seeing them head off to college, chase dreams, and build their futures fills us with pride—and also with wonder. What might Ryan have done? Who might he have become? These questions linger, even though we know they have no answers.

We are forever grateful to those who help keep Ryan’s memory alive. As the years pass, it’s not just the memories that sustain us—it’s the knowledge that Ryan continues to make an impact, even now.

Today, we invite you to take a moment to remember Ryan. Think of how he touched your life, what he meant to you. We will never forget his amazing smile, his contagious laugh, and the positive energy he brought into every room. The world could use more of that today.

We love you, Ry. Always.

Every day presents its challenges, but two days each year are especially difficult. Today is one of those days. Today would have been Ryan’s 21st birthday. While we remember him always, today we celebrate the life that we were lucky enough to share with him. Being a twin, it is always bittersweet to celebrate Sydney without also recognizing what has been lost. Though Ryan is physically gone, he continues to live on in our memories and continues to bring light to our lives. His laughter and joy can never be forgotten. So, if you have a moment today, please think of Ryan and be sure to wish him (and his sister Sydney) a very happy 21st birthday.

Today marks the 4th anniversary of the crash that tragically killed Ryan. He was such a bright light. We miss his infectious smile, sense of humor, witty charm, kindness, and his innate ability to make people feel seen & important. Keeping his memory alive is something our family does every single day.

There is something empowering in taking action to honor Ryan and with that in mind we are excited to announce that The Ryan Koeppel Foundation has begun to fulfill its mission of providing vision exams and prescription glasses to children in need. We are partnering with Plan A Health, a non-profit that provides free healthcare services to women in underserved communities in the Mississippi Delta and rural Georgia. Plan A Health also happens to be part of the family, as our cousin Caroline is the founder and Executive Director. Their mobile clinics opened in April 2021 and have been an invaluable resource to those in need. The first event provided over fifty pairs of glasses to children in rural MS. We are thrilled to be part of something that is desperately needed and can be so life changing in that community.

Our family is so excited for our next event. We need to buy the glasses frames so they can be ready for back to school. Any donation, big or small, will make an impact. We appreciate your support!

CA Senate Bill 1472 – Ryan’s Law goes into effect on January 1, 2023. We are honored that it was named in memory of our son, but we also stand with all the other parents who have lost children due to the epidemic of street racing, side shows and reckless driving. These deaths are avoidable and it is our sincere hope that this law along with further education on the dangers of reckless driving will help prevent future families from suffering the same pain and loss we’ve experienced. Thank you to Senator Henry Stern and his team for recognizing this problem and doing the hard work to get it through the Senate and Assembly in Sacramento and to Governor Newsom for signing the bill. Special thanks as well to our friend, criminal defense attorney Alison Triessl for helping with the language of this bill and working tirelessly to help make this a reality.

Today would have been Ryan’s 19th birthday. It’s hard to believe that it will be the third one without him being physically present. Though days like today are especially difficult for all of us we choose to celebrate all the amazing times we did have. Tonight we will sing Happy Birthday to Sydney but there will always be a cupcake with a candle lit to celebrate Ryan too. We were blessed to have you with us for 16. Happy Birthday Ry!!

2 years. Not a day goes by that we don't miss his smile, his laugh, his sense of humor, his presence. 24 months of remembering all the good times and funny stories. Ryan may be gone physically but he lives on in all of us. His family, his friends, the impact that he had on so many people. We choose joy because that is the word that describes him best. Joy. So today we honor his memory and look forward to the future with optimism and joy because that’s what Ryan would have wanted.

If we haven’t said it enough, thank you. Thank you for being here for our family. Thank you for checking in with phone calls and texts. Thank you for sending photos and memories. Thank you for keeping Ryan’s memory alive. The last two years would’ve been even more unimaginable without our family and friends by our side.

So today we ask everyone to see the joy. Do something to make you laugh so hard tears flow down your face. Eat ice cream. Ride a bike. Call a friend. Call your family. Make today count. Because Ryan is watching us and let's make him proud.

It was one year ago that the Farm Field at Encino Little League was dedicated in honor and memory of Ryan. It was a beautiful ceremony with speeches by coaches, friends, teammates and family which eloquently captured who Ryan was, what his Little League experience meant to him and what he meant to others. We thank his friends Evan Rose, Chad Kreshek, and Jacob Triessl for their idea of dedicating a field in his memory and working with the league to make it a reality. We also thank the executive board of in supporting this project. We know his legacy will continue to live on. Carin Weinberg Koeppel Jeff Koeppel
