“I’ve always been attracted to painting at marinas, both working boat marinas like the one behind Viking Village and Cassidy’s Fish Market, and pleasure craft marinas like the Beach Haven Yacht Club and the Lighthouse Marina in Barnegat Light. I love the colors, the complexity of all the masts and rigging, the shapes that present themselves. The challenge of organizing the tangle of line, shape and mark is just very appealing to me. It also gives me license to play with abstraction and scale in my work.

With the last few paintings I had some nice conversations with people involved with scallop fishing in particular, for instance I had a conversation with one of the skippers on the MS Manya. The next season I’m in the area, I hope to spend more time chatting with them and possible do some quick drawings of them in their working environments. The people and their relationships to the boats seem like an important area to be covered.”

“I had a brief two-night stay just off the island with my wife, 5-year old son, and our dog. I painted a couple quick plein air pieces in other locations on LBI, but it’s tough to find the time to paint while not completely ignoring your family. So we went to the end beach in Holgate, one of our favorites. They enjoyed the beach, and I enjoyed painting on the beach (other than the blood-thristy greenheads). I used oil paint on the beach, because that is what I use most often when plein air painting. I also did some thumbnail sketches with pencil on location. My final piece is a plein air Plus painting that resulted from the time and sketches on the beach, along with photos and other sketches from those photos.”

“Beyond the summer charm of the surf, beach and the vacation visitors of LBI are the many other faces of the island. From the nostalgic charm of the beautiful Victorian homes and sunlit porches overflowing with flower baskets in Beach Haven to the everyday grit and strength of the working fishing docks of Viking Village. It was a true joy to paint such iconic images of Americana.”

“My husband and I were both fortunate enough to be juried into LBIF Plein Air Plus. We researched where we can find some great locations to paint around LBI and spent a day exploring and talking to the locals. I was enchanted at first sight of The Gables in Beach Haven, with its magnificent architecture and abundant flowers! While painting over the months of July and August, I got to know the people behind the scenes who work there and own the place, along with customers who shared what the place means to them. I was captivated with the people and little nooks and crannies while watching the blooms change over the summer. The place is pure magic and I’m hoping my series of four paintings capture a little slice of it for others to enjoy!”
