We are officially at 300 participants for the 4th Annual Dash For A Cure 5K / 1 Mile Fun Walk / Kids Dash on Sunday, October 18th @ 3PM at the London Laurel County Farmers Market! 💕 That means we’re 3/4 of the way to our goal of 400, and we need YOU to help us cross the finish line!🫵🏁

🎀 BREAST CANCER IS NOT JUST ONE DISEASE 🎀

Did you know there are several different types of breast cancer?

Each type can behave differently, respond differently to treatment, and have a different outlook. Understanding that breast cancer is not the same for everyone helps us raise awareness and better support every person facing this disease. 💗

Some breast cancers are identified by where they begin, while others are classified by characteristics such as hormone receptor or HER2 status. These differences can help doctors determine the most appropriate treatment for each individual.

That’s why awareness matters. Education matters. Early detection matters. 🎀

The more we learn, the better we can encourage one another to know our bodies, talk with our healthcare providers about changes or concerns, stay up to date on recommended screenings, and support those whose breast cancer journeys may look very different from one another.

And this October, we’re turning awareness into ACTION! 👟💕

🎀 SURVIVOR SPOTLIGHT: MEGAN BREWER 🎀

Please take a moment to meet Megan Brewer — a story of faith, strength, hope, and the importance of listening to your body. 💗

Megan is a wife to Cody, mom to Easton and Maisie, and someone who never imagined that at just 32 years old, breast cancer would become part of her story.

In October 2023, Megan participated in the 1st Annual Dash For A Cure to support her dear friend, Jeannie Osborne, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Little did Megan know that just a few months later, she would begin a breast cancer journey of her own.

In January 2024, Megan discovered a lump in her left breast. She was young and had no family history of breast cancer, but thankfully, she listened to her body and made an appointment with her doctor.

What followed were mammograms, an ultrasound and a biopsy — and then the words no one is prepared to hear:

“You have breast cancer.”

Megan was diagnosed with Stage 2A invasive ductal carcinoma, ER-positive and HER2-positive.

Her journey included chemotherapy, immunotherapy and a double mastectomy. During her very first chemotherapy treatment, Megan suffered a frightening allergic reaction and anaphylactic shock. But she chose to keep fighting.

She had a husband she loved. Children she wanted to watch grow up. A family and friends standing beside her. And through it all, Megan leaned heavily on her faith in God, finding strength, comfort and peace to keep moving forward. 🙏💗

Megan’s message to other women is simple but important:

🎀 Listen to your body. Know what is normal for you. Talk to your healthcare provider about any changes or concerns.

Her story is also an important reminder that breast cancer can affect younger women and that having no family history does not mean there is no risk.

Megan, thank you for allowing your story to be shared. Your courage, faith and determination are an inspiration. 💕

🎀 CAN YOU REDUCE YOUR RISK OF BREAST CANCER? 🎀

While there is no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, there are healthy choices that may help lower your risk. 💗

Small choices can make a difference:

🏃‍♀️ GET MOVING — Make regular physical activity part of your routine.

🥗 EAT A HEALTHY, BALANCED DIET — Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other nutritious foods.

⚖️ MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT — Especially after menopause, excess body weight is associated with increased breast cancer risk.

🍷 LIMIT OR AVOID ALCOHOL — Even small amounts of alcohol can increase breast cancer risk.

🚭 DON’T SMOKE — Choosing not to smoke is an important part of protecting your overall health.

🩺 KNOW YOUR PERSONAL RISK — Talk with your healthcare provider about your family history and other factors that may affect your breast cancer risk.

🎀 STAY UP TO DATE ON SCREENING — Screening doesn’t prevent breast cancer, but it can help find cancer earlier, when treatment may be more successful. Talk with your healthcare provider about when screening is right for you.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s encourage one another to MOVE MORE. KNOW OUR RISK. GET SCREENED. AND TAKE CARE OF OUR HEALTH. 💕

🎀 EVERY SURVIVOR HAS A STORY. EVERY STORY MATTERS. 🎀

Today, we are honored to share the breast cancer survivor story of Crystal Couch. Take a few minutes to read Crystal’s story. Celebrate her strength. Share her story. And let it be a reminder to encourage the women you love to take care of their health and stay up to date with recommended screenings. 💗

My name is Crystal Couch and I was diagnosed with stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma on October 11, 2021 just two weeks shy of my 32nd birthday. With no family history of breast cancer, I had initially dismissed the lump I had found in my right breast as some sort of cyst or other benign cause until the lump began to grow. I had gone to my primary care provider who scheduled me for a mammogram at Baptist Health Corbin. This led to a biopsy and a diagnosis that no one could prepare me for. My two daughters were only 5 and 6 at the time and my first thought was “who is going to take care of my girls?”

My healing journey was not an easy one but God, my family and my care team were with me every step of the way. On November 29, 2021, I opted to have a double mastectomy with implant reconstruction. It was during that surgery that my surgeon discovered that my cancer had moved from my original breast tumor to two nearby lymph nodes. This discovery led to the recommendation of chemotherapy and radiation. Both of which terrified me!

I completed my first chemotherapy treatment on January 25, 2022. My treatment plan included 4 rounds of Adriamycin/Cytoxan and 12 rounds of Taxol. It was challenging between losing my hair and feeling sick but before I knew it, I was ringing the bell on June 20, 2022 with my husband by my side- one of the greatest victories of my life! Once chemo was finished, I went on to complete 30 breast radiation treatments between July and August and was able to ring the bell again on August 29, 2022. This time my daughters were able to join us for a moment we will never forget!

I have been considered no evidence of disease (NED) since September 2022 and I am currently on hormone therapy to prevent recurrence. I am blessed to be able to live the life that I fought for and I enjoy each day that I get to spend my daughters, my husband and our family. Whether it’s ministering at the Church that my husband and I pastor at, cheering for our daughters at ballgames, tending to our chickens and rabbits, spending a lazy day on the porch swing or having the opportunity to work for the healthcare organization that helped save my life, I consider it all a gift that I get to be here for.

Crystal’s story is a reminder of why we continue to raise awareness, why early detection matters, and why we come together each year for Dash For A Cure.

Think about 8 women you love — your mom, sister, daughter, wife, best friend, coworker, neighbor. Breast cancer touches so many families in our community, and that’s why awareness, early detection, and support matter. 💗

✨ Finding breast cancer early can make a difference in treatment and outcomes.

Today we remember Lizzy Musi, whose courageous battle with breast cancer touched the hearts of many. Though her journey ended too soon, her strength, grace, and determination continue to inspire those who knew and loved her. Lizzy faced life's challenges with remarkable courage, leaving behind a legacy of hope, resilience, and love that will never be forgotten.

As we honor Lizzy's memory, we also celebrate Marcella Marcum, a breast cancer survivor whose strength and perseverance shine as a testament to the power of hope. Marcella's journey reminds us that even in the face of difficult challenges, courage and faith can carry us through.

May Lizzy's memory continue to inspire awareness, compassion, and support for those affected by breast cancer.
May Marcella's survival story serve as a beacon of encouragement to others who are still fighting. Together, they remind us of the importance of love, resilience, and cherishing every precious moment.
